Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The G-Class lineup consists of gasoline G 550 and AMG G 63 models, and a first-ever all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology variant. The base G 550 trades last year’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine for a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG G 63 keeps its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which produces 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Both models add mild-hybrid system providing 20 hp and 148 lb-ft at lower speeds, with everything connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions and permanent four-wheel drive (4WD) with locking front, center, and rear differentials.
Which Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers these trims:
- G 550: The base model brings the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, mild-hybrid assistance, nine-speed automatic transmission, permanent 4WD with locking front, center, and rear differentials, 19-inch wheels, MBUX with dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Burmester 3D surround sound system. It suits you if you want the core G-Class experience and the best-value trim.
- AMG G 63: This performance trim adds the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, more power, AMG Active Ride Control suspension, 20-inch wheels, and a sportier steering wheel with buttons and switches for the various settings. It suits you if you want the most powerful gasoline G-Class and a more aggressive driving character.
- G 580 with EQ Technology: This all-electric variant expands the lineup with a fully electric powertrain and the ability to perform the “G Turn,” rotating the vehicle on the spot. It suits you if you want the newest powertrain direction in the G-Class lineup.
What Mercedes-Benz G-Class do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class years with the most listings are 2024, 2022, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 841 | 33.1% |
| 2022 | 829 | 32.8% |
| 2023 | 762 | 34% |
| 2025 | 755 | 32.3% |
| 2021 | 754 | 34.7% |
| 2020 | 655 | 34.4% |
Higher-listing model years tend to draw more shopper attention because they offer more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right color, trim, and price. They also often sit near the center of the used-market sweet spot, where availability and pricing both stay attractive.
What is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | $104,319 | −9.01% |
| 2022 | $159,440 | −6.56% |
| 2016 | $62,707 | −5.67% |
| 2025 | $191,784 | −5.04% |
| 2020 | $120,374 | −4.05% |
| 2024 | $178,143 | −3.71% |
| 2023 | $167,769 | −3.2% |
| 2015 | $54,056 | −2.93% |
| 2017 | $83,564 | −2.79% |
| 2021 | $136,301 | −2.18% |
| 2018 | $86,146 | +0.04% |
| 2014 | $52,029 | +1.57% |
Most model years are down year over year, which gives used buyers more room to shop than they had a year ago. The largest drops are concentrated in several older and recent model years, while a couple of years are essentially flat or slightly higher. That mix suggests the G-Class still commands strong demand, but pricing has softened enough in many years to create better entry points for shoppers.
The 2018 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2018, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

For the safest used buy, the 2021 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.04% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −3.71%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 32.3% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.1%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $178,143. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers a distinctive boxy design, strong presence, and a cabin that feels unmistakably upscale.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The base G 550 trades last year’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine for a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG G 63 keeps its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which produces 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: It features the same Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system as other vehicles wearing the three-pointed star, with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a pair of 12.3-inch screens.
- Safety: Three new features were also added for the 2025 model year, including route-based speed adaptation for adaptive cruise control, automated lane centering, and an emergency-stop feature.
- Starting price: The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 550 and AMG G 63 are scheduled to reach U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2024, with pricing information to be revealed closer to that time.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class impresses with its luxurious design, powerful performance, and off-road capabilities across all model years. Owners love its rugged build quality, iconic style, and the blend of luxury with functionality. However, many highlight drawbacks like high maintenance costs, limited rear seating, and steep pricing, which might deter some buyers. Despite these concerns, the overall reception remains overwhelmingly positive as drivers appreciate its ability to retain value and provide a unique driving experience.

top of the line suv with power, sophistication and smart features. the dynamic of creating a vehicle that is strong, sturdy and can be utilized for a casual drive as well as offroading is attractive to me. the vehicle is a higher level suv and the only downfall i see is the price but these vehicles will run many miles if properly serviced .

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class stands out immediately for its unmistakable blocky, utilitarian shape, a design that has remained true to its roots even as the SUV has evolved into a luxury vehicle. It is a five-passenger, body-on-frame SUV with standard all-wheel drive, and its rugged character gives it a presence that feels unlike almost anything else on the road. Mercedes-Benz also pairs that old-school look with a sophisticated powertrain, mechanicals, and technology, which helps the G-Class feel both distinctive and modern.
That combination makes the 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class appealing to buyers who want serious capability wrapped in a luxury package. Its powerful engine is a clear strength, and its reputation for off-road and overlanding ability adds to its appeal. At the same time, it is not the most practical choice for everyone: the G-Class is noted for poor handling, poor fuel economy, and limited cargo space, and its price starts at $131,750. Owners also tend to praise its performance, visibility, and design, while some point out that rear seating space is limited.
