Mazda Tribute Overview
Making its debut in 2001, the compact Mazda Tribute SUV was based on the same platform as the Ford Escape (which debuted the same year). It was not the first time Mazdas and Fords had shared components and platforms. In 1979, Ford bought a 25-percent stake in Mazda, and the two automakers have been linked ever since. In fact, Mazda built early Ford Ranger pickup trucks, until Ford took over production of the trucks in the mid-1980s. Mazda did make an effort to distinguish its SUV from Ford's, however, labeling the Tribute as a sport SUV, and backing that up with sporty styling and a series of peppy engines.
Throughout its run, the Tribute was available in both front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions. Power has been provided by a series of four-cylinder and V6 engines. Initially, power was provided by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produced 130 horsepower, or a 3.0-liter double-overhead-cam V6 that pumped out 200 horsepower. In 2005, power for the four-cylinder was boosted to 153 horsepower.
For its first four years, the Tribute was available in three trim packages, including the entry-level DX, the mid-level LX, and the high-end, leather-interior ES. Following a redesign in 2005, trim packages were revised to include entry-level i and higher-end s packages, with leather seats being available only as an option. Standard features for both packages included air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, anti-lock brakes, dual airbags, and a stereo system with a CD player.

The Mazda Tribute has garnered positive remarks for its comfort, spacious interior, and smooth handling across multiple model years. Many drivers enjoy its reliability and decent power, particularly from the V6 engine, and find it to be a dependable option for everyday use. However, some common complaints include insufficient engine power, disappointing fuel economy, and issues with rust and maintenance. Overall, the Tribute stands out for its all-wheel drive capability and cargo space, making it a practical choice for families and adventure-seekers alike.

Owned this vehicle since new. Love the acceleration and fuel economy for a AWD sport ute. Seats four comfortably and travels well for a couple and dog with gear. Towed beyond expectations - straight with good capacity. It has been a great value, but the newer models lost a little rear seat legroom.
For an SUV this vehicle has been extremely reliable with an amazingly lower cost of maintenance and ownership. Have not had to make any major repairs to this vehicle other than preventative maintenace. It is extremly powerful for a V6 with alot of "giddyup" and great handling. would buy another in a second!!
I like the visibility from the driver's seat, the short turning radius is great as well. Highway fuel economy is impressive. Traction and stability control is fantastic for winter driving- seems like summer all year round! Decent price as well!
No major repairs ever needed on our Mazda Tribute. 2005 Mazda Tribute was great for pulling a trailer of ATV's. Fits five people. Original car mats still in vehicle. Back set folds down easily to hull larger items. It has two net areas in back to store items. It has a jack I have never needed to use in the back right of trunk area. You just turn the two round knobs to open it up.
With the V6 and AWD, great hauler and about 19mpg on average.
