Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Lexus GX a good car?
Yes — the Lexus GX earns a strong all-generations owner rating and has a clear identity as a rugged luxury SUV.
The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the GX for its off-road capability, durable construction, and comfortable, upscale cabin. Reliability and long-distance comfort also come up again and again, along with the model’s distinctive rugged-yet-refined character.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2020 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on fuel economy, technology age on older generations, and the cost of getting the most trail-focused equipment on newer models.
28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Lexus GX models reliable?
The Lexus GX has a strong reputation with owners for durability, comfort, and long-term dependability. Across the model years in the data, that praise shows up alongside appreciation for its robust build and upscale feel.
- Owners rate the Lexus GX between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that higher-mileage examples can reflect the GX’s truck-based design and premium upkeep expectations, so a careful history check matters.

Customers say
The Lexus GX is a well-loved luxury SUV known for its impressive off-road capabilities, robust construction, and luxurious interior. Most owners appreciate its comfort and reliability, especially on long drives. The V8 engine is favored for its power, providing a smooth and confident drive. However, many drivers express concern about its fuel economy and find the technology outdated compared to newer competitors. Overall, the GX stands out for its rugged yet refined feel, making it a top choice for families and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Reviewed a 2010 Lexus GX on Oct 22, 2025
The 2010 Lexus GX is generally a great SUV with a V8 engine shared with the Lexus LS460. Although it looks like a rugged heavy duty SUV, the weight of it tends to cause it to wear down its components like the suspension and engine. Trouble issues tend to be oil leaks from numerous places like the valve covers and cam towers. Additional issues include the dreaded coolant leak of the valley pan gasket and radiator. If you drive a used one, if you smell a sweet odor emanating from the engine, it's probably one of those aforementioned leaks of coolant. Should you buy one? Yes, with the caveat that most if not all aspects of the engine, coolant and suspension have been addressed. Also check CarFax websites for services performed and NHTSA for known issues reported.

Good reliable features. Yes for the price it’s a good value since it’s a Toyota. It’s missing a backup camera and Bluetooth. I’d compare it to the 4Runner.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Lexus GX stands out because it marks a major redesign for a nameplate long associated with rugged capability and luxury. For 2024, it was completely overhauled, adopting a boxier shape and faceted body panels that give it a more substantial look than before. It is also several inches longer and wider than its predecessor, which creates more passenger and cargo space, and it replaces the old side-hinged tailgate with a more conventional liftgate. That combination makes the GX feel more modern and more practical without abandoning its adventure-ready identity.
The 2024 GX also broadens its appeal with a wide range of trims and equipment. The lineup includes six trim levels, and even the entry-level Premium comes with a power liftgate, third-row seats, synthetic leather upholstery, a 10-speaker sound system, ventilated front seats, navigation, and advanced safety features. Higher trims add conveniences and luxury touches such as a wireless phone charger, a panoramic-view monitor, semi-automated parking, massaging front seats, second-row sunshades, an adaptive suspension, and a digital rearview mirror. For buyers who want a more rugged focus, the Overtrail trims add all-terrain tires, e-KDSS, a Torsen locking rear differential, crawl control, downhill assist control, and roof rails.
Under the hood, all models use a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 with 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. That setup helps the GX reach 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, but the driving character still leans toward comfort rather than sporty handling, so it can feel soft and top-heavy on winding roads. Fuel economy is also modest at an EPA-estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway. Even so, the 2024 Lexus GX is appealing because it blends genuine off-road hardware, a more upscale cabin, and the kind of durability-minded reputation that has long made the GX a distinctive choice among luxury SUVs.
