What should I look for when buying a used Land Rover Defender?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |

| 2024 | 93.5% |
| 2023 | 92% |

Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a surround-view camera system
- Infotainment: a larger 13.1-inch touchscreen that continues to integrate wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Which Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?
The 2026 Land Rover Defender offers...
- Defender 90 S: This is the entry point if you want the most accessible way into the lineup, and it suits you if you want the Defender’s core rugged style and capability without moving up the price ladder.
- Defender 110: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it pairs the Defender’s broad capability with the most widely available powertrain and a versatile four-door body style.
- Defender 130: Choose this if you want the stretched body style and the added versatility that comes with it.
- Defender Octa: This is the performance-focused choice, with massive fender flares, enormous all-terrain tires, and a more extreme presence for buyers who want the most dramatic version of the Defender.
- Defender Trophy Edition: This trim adds Sandglow Yellow paint that recalls the Camel Trophy and suits buyers who want a more distinctive, heritage-inspired look.
- Defender X: This trim adds more black trim, including a blackout treatment for the front fascia and hood, for a darker, more aggressive appearance.
What Land Rover Defender do most buyers choose?
The Land Rover Defender years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 2,019 | 34.2% |
| 2023 | 1,720 | 33.3% |
| 2025 | 1,514 | 34.1% |
| 2022 | 1,284 | 33.5% |
| 2026 | 915 | 34.3% |
| 2021 | 703 | 35.1% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare and more chances to find the right trim, price, and condition. They also tend to be the years shoppers cross-shop most often when looking for a balance of availability and value.
What is the Land Rover Defender's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | $37,835 | −14.49% |
| 2023 | $53,981 | −13.55% |
| 2022 | $45,756 | −13.28% |
| 2024 | $60,824 | −13.18% |
| 2021 | $41,364 | −10.95% |
| 2025 | $70,654 | −4.22% |
The table shows broad downward movement across the lineup, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to benefit from lower asking prices. Several years are posting double-digit declines, while the newest model year is falling more slowly than the rest. That pattern suggests recent Defenders are still adjusting in price, but some older examples have already moved down sharply.
The 2025, 2021, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Consider waiting if:

Customers say
The Land Rover Defender impresses across multiple model years with its exceptional off-road capabilities and rugged construction. Owners consistently praise its power, robust build quality, and unique styling, which contributes to a timeless appeal. However, concerns often arise regarding fuel economy and comfort, especially for models lacking modern amenities. Many appreciate its versatility as a vehicle ideal for both off-road adventures and daily driving, though high maintenance costs can deter some potential buyers.

Aside from this model, I also test drove the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, and there is no comparison. For the same price (this specific Defender being a 2024), inside and out, drivability, power, handling on surface streets and freeway, the Defender beat it in every category.

CarGurus recommends the 2024 Land Rover Defender

Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Land Rover Defender 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Land Rover Defender stands out as a rugged-yet-refined choice for luxury SUV shoppers who want legitimate off-road ability. Its appeal is rooted in a long history as a go-anywhere vehicle built for demanding conditions, but the modern Defender is a far more sophisticated take on that idea. For buyers drawn to overlanding or simply to the look and feel of an adventure-ready SUV, it offers both capability and style.
For the 2024 model year, the Defender adds a host of new trims and features, and the availability of one of its powerful V8 engine options has been expanded. That combination broadens its already strong lineup and gives shoppers more room to tailor the vehicle to their needs. It also brings a long list of standard interior and safety features, which helps the Defender feel more complete than a bare-bones off-roader.
The tradeoffs are worth noting, though. Handling is more cumbersome than most luxury SUVs, and fuel economy is below average. Even so, the 2024 Land Rover Defender remains distinctive because it blends serious off-road credentials with a more upscale, versatile character than many rivals can match.
