The Kia Sportage's current nationwide average price is $21,045, and its lowest point over the past year was $19,714. Recently, prices have come down for the 2025 and 2026 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.

Is the Kia Sportage a good car?

Yes — the Kia Sportage is a strong used SUV choice if you want comfort, space, and a well-equipped cabin. The all-generations owner rating is 4.5/5 across every model year in the data.

Expert reviews rate the 2017 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.

The main trade-offs in recent expert-tested years center on fairly pedestrian performance, the X-Pro’s underwhelming value proposition, and some versions that feel less compelling when you compare their equipment to their price.

Are Kia Sportage models reliable?

Owners and experts consistently point to the Sportage’s comfort, value, and broad feature set as major strengths. Across the model years in the data, it also earns praise for smooth handling, a roomy cabin, and a family-friendly driving experience.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by checking history carefully and focusing on well-maintained examples, especially in older model years.

What should I look for when buying a used Kia Sportage?

Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 80.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, lane following assist, and front and rear parking sensors
• Infotainment: a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Fuel efficiency: EPA fuel-economy ratings for the non-hybrid Sportage are 28 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway) with FWD and 26 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway) with AWD. Unless you opt for the Sportage X-Pro, that is. It’s rated at a lower 24 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 26 mpg highway). The other powertrain options are more efficient—the FWD Sportage hybrid is rated at 42 mpg combined, and the plug-in hybrid gets up to 34 miles of all-electric—but these numbers are comparable to the non-hybrid competition.

Which Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2026 Kia Sportage offers these trims:

• LX: the entry point with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the model’s core safety tech; a strong value pick if you want the essentials
• EX: adds more equipment while keeping the same broad powertrain choices, making it a smart step up for shoppers who want more comfort and convenience
• SX: brings a more premium feel and includes the Harman Kardon audio system, making it a good fit if you want a richer cabin experience
• SX-Prestige: adds more upscale equipment and is available with AWD, making it a well-rounded choice for shoppers who want a more loaded Sportage
• X-Line: adds different front and rear bumpers, a tread-like stitching pattern for its SynTex artificial leather upholstery, and standard AWD
• X-Pro Prestige: the most expensive non-hybrid version, with all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels, standard AWD, and the most rugged presentation in the lineup

What Kia Sportage do most buyers choose?

The Kia Sportage years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.

Those higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price. They also sit close enough to the current generation to deliver the modern features many used buyers want.

What is the Kia Sportage's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it creates more room for value. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples are falling more gradually. One model year is moving up slightly, showing that demand can still support certain versions.

The 2024, 2016, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

• 2022: 8/10

Should I buy a used Kia Sportage now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2026 model is at −10.76% versus a year ago, and the 2025 model is at −5.59%.
• Deal availability: The 2026 model has 32.9% good and great deals, and the 2025 model has 33.4%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $25,914. The Kia Sportage offers a roomy cabin and a comfortable, family-friendly driving character.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The 2026 Sportage is available with conventional gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and the non-hybrid models use a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque.
• Tech: A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen are standard, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard.
• Safety: Higher trim levels also feature adaptive cruise control synced with the navigation system to provide smoother driving through curves, and the even more advanced Highway Driving Assist system, which adds automated lane centering.
• Starting price: Pricing starts at $30,135 for a FWD Sportage LX.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
