What should I look for when buying a used Kia Sportage?

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: EPA fuel-economy ratings for the non-hybrid Sportage are 28 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway) with FWD and 26 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway) with AWD. Unless you opt for the Sportage X-Pro, that is. It’s rated at a lower 24 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 26 mpg highway). The other powertrain options are more efficient—the FWD Sportage hybrid is rated at 42 mpg combined, and the plug-in hybrid gets up to 34 miles of all-electric—but these numbers are comparable to the non-hybrid competition.

Which Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2026 Kia Sportage offers these trims:

• LX: The entry trim starts with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a six-speed automatic, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and standard driver-assist features; it’s the value-focused starting point.
• EX: This trim adds more comfort and convenience equipment while keeping the Sportage’s core tech and everyday usability intact, making it a strong step-up choice.
• SX: This trim brings a Harman Kardon premium audio system and a richer feature set for shoppers who want a more upscale cabin.
• SX-Prestige: This trim adds available AWD and more advanced equipment, making it a good fit if you want a more premium daily driver.
• X-Line: This trim adds standard AWD, different front and rear bumpers, and a tread-like stitching pattern for its SynTex artificial leather upholstery.
• X-Pro Prestige: This trim adds standard AWD, all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels, and the most rugged presentation in the lineup.

What Kia Sportage do most buyers choose?

The Kia Sportage years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they combine broad availability with newer features and strong value. They also give you more choices across trims, prices, and equipment levels.

What is the Kia Sportage's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The sharpest drops are concentrated in newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples have smaller declines and one recent year is moving up.

The 2024, 2016, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
