Is the Kia Forte a good car?
Yes — the Kia Forte is a strong used-car pick if you want value, comfort, and everyday usability. The all-generations owner rating is 4.55/5 across every model year in the data.

Expert reviews rate the 2020 and 2019 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on the base engine's modest performance, some interior materials that feel a bit basic in places, and road noise that can stand out more than you'd like. Even so, the Forte's value proposition stays compelling, especially if you prioritize comfort and features over outright speed.
31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

For used buyers, the long-term ownership picture looks encouraging if you choose carefully and verify condition, history, and maintenance records before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used Kia Forte?
Across all model years, at 72.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2024 | 82.8% |
| 2023 | 81.9% |
| 2022 | 77.9% |
| 2021 | 67.7% |
| 2020 | 62% |
| 2019 | 55.7% |
| 2018 | 51.6% |
| 2017 | 48% |
| 2016 | 47.9% |
| 2015 | 48.7% |
| 2014 | 49.6% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance safety features on all 2023 Forte models include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor.
- Infotainment: Supporting Forte trims come standard with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen while the GT-Line and above receive a 10.25-inch display, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included with all models.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission isn't as fuel efficient as the automatic. It's estimated by the EPA to only return 26 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The automatic should achieve 30 mpg. The most economical of the lineup is the base LX trim, which is estimated at 34 mpg. Other Fortes with this powertrain are rated at 32 mpg combined.
Which Kia Forte trim should I buy?
The 2023 Kia Forte offers...
- LX: The base LX trim gives you the Forte's value-focused starting point, and it is the best-value choice if you want the lowest entry price while still getting the model's core comfort and everyday usability.
- GT-Line: The GT-Line adds the larger 10.25-inch display, wireless charging, and navigation, making it the trim to target if you want the strongest mix of tech and convenience.
- GT: The GT brings the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or six-speed manual, and a sport-tuned suspension, so it suits you if you want the most engaging Forte.
What Kia Forte do most buyers choose?
The Kia Forte years with the most listings are 2023, 2024, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 4,569 | 32.6% |
| 2024 | 3,974 | 32.9% |
| 2022 | 3,377 | 31.9% |
| 2021 | 1,661 | 29.3% |
| 2020 | 1,458 | 29.2% |
| 2019 | 1,066 | 28.5% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you the broadest selection and the strongest mix of pricing and deal availability. That makes it easier to compare listings and find a Forte that fits your budget.
What is the Kia Forte's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | $12,820 | −11.04% |
| 2018 | $9,588 | −9.82% |
| 2016 | $7,754 | −9.68% |
| 2017 | $9,003 | −7.65% |
| 2019 | $11,836 | −7.18% |
| 2021 | $14,459 | −5.85% |
| 2022 | $17,363 | −5.35% |
| 2014 | $6,901 | −5.21% |
| 2015 | $7,355 | −4.07% |
| 2024 | $19,353 | −1.79% |
| 2023 | $18,767 | −1.14% |
Most Forte model years are down year over year, which is good news if you're shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The largest drops are concentrated in older and mid-cycle years, while the newest models are declining more gradually. That pattern suggests you can find stronger value in several parts of the lineup rather than having to focus only on the oldest examples.
The 2023, 2024, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Kia Forte safe?
- 2022: 7/10

- 2019: 9/10
- 2017: 8/10
- 2015: 6/10

Should I buy a used Kia Forte now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2023 model is at −1.14% versus a year ago, and the 2022 model is at −5.35%.
- Deal availability: The 2023 model has 32.6% good and great deals, and the 2022 model has 31.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $18,767. The Kia Forte offers a comfortable ride and strong everyday value, which makes it easy to live with as a used compact sedan.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, while the GT uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 201 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: Supporting Forte trims come standard with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen while the GT-Line and above receive a 10.25-inch display, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included with all models.
- Safety: Standard driver assistance safety features on all 2023 Forte models include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor.
- Starting price: The 2023 Kia Forte in base LX trim has a starting price of $20,815 (including $1,125 in destination fees), making it one of the more affordable cars on sale today.
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2025 inventory to mature.

However, some users have noted areas of improvement, particularly in terms of interior quality, acceleration performance, and road noise. Despite these critiques, the Forte remains a popular choice for those seeking a compact sedan with great fuel economy and solid handling.

Good value, feels a little cheap but it’s totally understandable since it is the base model. Feels great also for tall people, enough leg room even in the back. Trunk is spacious.

Excellent features. Yes. I do think so. The thing missing is that the passenger side seat doesn't have automation. It is hand adjustable. I am not sure why. The passenger seat is temperature controlled.

About the Kia Forte
The Kia Forte is a compact, four-door sedan powered by either a 2.0-liter normally aspirated four-cylinder good for 147 horsepower, or a 1.6-liter turbo with 210 hp. The Kia Forte is current in its third generation. Prior generations included a small five-door hatchback along with the sedan body style, but that car has been discontinued.
What are the advantages of the Kia Forte?
- Sharp styling in and out
- A roomy, comfortable interior
- A long list of standard features
What is the best Kia Forte model year?
While the Forte has been on sale for three generations all the way back to 2008, you’re better off looking at the current generation. Available since the 2019 model year, the current generation Kia Forte not only improves performance but provides a lot of modern safety technology that the earlier generations simply didn’t have.
What are the disadvantages of the Kia Forte?
The Forte’s biggest disadvantage is that while it looks great and has decent engine power, the car’s handling doesn’t quite match the looks. On the other hand, it doesn’t have a punishing ride like some of the vehicles at the performance end of this class. The Forte is also offered in a GT trim level with a six-speed manual transmission, but it’s at a $600 upcharge versus the seven-speed dual clutch automatic, which seems counterintuitive.
Comparison: Is the Kia Forte better than the Honda Accord?
The Accord is a bigger car on the outside, but it appears that the Kia Forte makes much better use of its dimensions. Most of the interior dimensions (headroom, shoulder room, leg room) are within decimal points of the Accord. Only hiproom is larger by an inch in the Accord. The Accord beats the Forte out in cargo room, but only by a cubic foot, hardly enough to argue about. Where the Kia beats the pants off the Accord is in price: New, a Kia Forte starts at $19,760, while you can’t buy an Accord LX for less than $27,895. You could fully load a Forte GT Manual with cargo nets, floor mats, Rusty Jones and Teflon paint treatment, and still come in under the price of the least expensive Accord.
Is the Kia Forte a reliable car?
As of this writing, there have been two recalls of the Kia Forte in the current generation: One for a badly welded lower control arm on 2023 Fortes, and one for a steering knuckle that’s prone to cracking, also on the 2023 model year only.
Is the Kia Forte worth the cost?
The Kia Forte isn’t one of America’s least expensive cars, but starting under $20,000 and capping out at $26,000 is remarkable in today’s overheated marketplace. It’s a terrific little car that shares a lot of family resemblance with the K5. What you will have trouble with on the used market is finding one with the 1.6-liter turbo. We searched locally within fifty miles of our location and found well over 300 Kia Fortes for sale but 100% of those were equipped with the rather underwhelming 147-hp 2.0-liter engine.
