Jaguar X-TYPE Overview
The X-Type has served as Jaguar's entry-level model since it arrived in 2001. It is built from Ford's CDW27 platform, which it shares with past models like the Ford Mondeo, Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique, and Mercury Cougar. While the X-Type embodies more of Ford's engineering and components than Jaguar's, its design borrows many elements from the Jaguar XJ sedans.
The X-Type has not been very successful against its most direct competition, with the comparably priced BMW 3 Series outselling it by nearly a 10-to-1 ratio in recent years. However, it does account for more than one-third of Jaguar's total U.S. sales. It certainly is an easier car to buy, with a base price about $30,000 less than that of the XJ.
The current X-Types are powered by a comparatively modest 3.0-liter DOHC V6 that provides 227 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque. This is also the only Jaguar to use a 5-speed automatic transmission. While the X-Type is lightweight and not incredibly powerful, its fuel economy is lowered a bit by the full-time AWD. The EPA estimates 18 mpg city/24 highway for both models.
Because the X-Types are positioned well below the other Jaguar models in price, their option list is a bit more comprehensive. Jaguar has also adjusted some of the packages for this year. Both models are equipped with leather seating, wood trim, full power accessories, cruise control and a power driver's seat. The sedan will feel more like a Jag if the optional luxury package is added. This includes rain-sensing wipers, a memory function power seat for the driver, a burl walnut finish and piping on the seats.

What people say
Absolutely stunning car with amazing features!!! Love the style and performance metrics.
Love my Jag, it suits me and my life style perfectly. The size is perfect with the comfort of taking out friends with its spacious passenger compartment, yet compact enough to feel the sporty aspect of the car. The handling is awesome and the 2.5 is enough power for me.
Terrific for turning heads, and a steal if you can find a low-mileage one like I did. Performance is definitely good enough to make driving enjoyable, but acceleration can be a little sluggish and I could deal with a bit firmer cornering. On the other hand, the ride is silky smooth. Build quality seems to be excellent where it really matters, but a few interior parts are below grade. The exhaust note gets tiring at highway speed, and it's rendered more noticeable by the fact that very little other sound enters the cabin. Recommended, but with caveats: Be aware that the (standard) AWD system reportedly doesn't hold up well to aggressive driving and that, in spite of its relatively modest rating of 198 hp, the 2.5L V6 drinks premium fuel.
This was a very nice looking car, the interior was very nice and leather all around. The interior and body styling definitely said Jaguar, even if it was a baby Jag. I got a lot of comments on it, as I kept it clean and well cared for. While I always thought it was a bit under-powered, with the 2.5L V6, I think the 3.0L would be fine. The AWD system worked quite well and definitely improved traction in the snowy Colorado winter road conditions. The price was surprisingly moderate relative to other European cars of similar size and features. The down side was maintenance costs. It was difficult to get parts for, the parts were much more expensive than the American car equivalents and I had to go to a specialty Jaguar repair shop for anything more complicated than an oil change, which was also more expensive. Mine had on-going issues with the throttle body and the engine electronic systems, particularly fuel delivery systems. Sadly, mine got totaled out as a result of an accident. The damage was not too terrible, but the repair cost exceeded the value of the car, so the insurance totaled it out. Seems the body shop had the same issue with parts availability and costs that I had, and it was just not worth fixing.
The more I drive this car, the more I love it. It has a feel unlike any other car, and I've owned many makes. The AWD is what makes this little Jag shine. Corners flat, no body roll, very silky smooth ride, and you will catch yourself looking down at the speedo and saying "whoops...90" and won't feel like it. It is my daily driver and I am pleased with it. Do the maintenance. But that goes without saying for ANY car.
