Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist on the Sport trim
- Infotainment: 8-inch Blue Link touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 23 mpg city, 31 highway, 26 combined; 24, 32, 27 with the automatic; 22 mpg city, 29 highway, 25 combined; 26 city, 32 highway, and 28 combined with the 7-speed dual-clutch unit
Which Hyundai Elantra GT trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT offers...
- Base: This is the best-value trim if you want the core hatchback experience with 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 60/40 split-fold rear seat, SiriusXM, and manually adjustable front seats.
- Sport: This trim adds LED head- and taillights, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, heated front seats, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, mirror-integrated turn signals, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a 4.2-inch TFT display. It suits you if you want the most complete and upscale-feeling version.
What Hyundai Elantra GT do most buyers choose?
The Hyundai Elantra GT years with the most listings are 2017, 2015, and 2014.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | 235 | 37% |
| 2015 | 202 | 31.7% |
| 2014 | 188 | 31.9% |
| 2016 | 173 | 31.2% |
| 2018 | 160 | 40% |
| 2019 | 154 | 40.9% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more shopping choice, which can make it easier to compare prices, conditions, and deal quality. They also tend to be the years that show up most often in the used market, so they’re a natural starting point for many buyers.
What is the Hyundai Elantra GT's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | $11,855 | −6.35% |
| 2017 | $8,646 | −4.91% |
| 2016 | $8,625 | −3.8% |
| 2014 | $7,291 | −3.5% |
Prices are moving lower across the model years shown, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The declines are strongest on the newer examples, while the older years are changing more gradually. That creates a useful spread of value depending on how much you want to spend.
The 2014, 2016, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Hyundai Elantra GT safe?
- 2018: 8/10
The Elantra GT comes standard with front and side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are standard on the Sport trim.
For the safest used buy, the 2018 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used Hyundai Elantra GT now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2018 model is at −6.35% versus a year ago, and the 2017 model is at −4.91%.
- Deal availability: The 2018 model has 40% good and great deals, and the 2017 model has 37%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2017 model has the most listings at a current average price of $8,646. The Hyundai Elantra GT offers a practical hatchback layout with a comfortable ride and a sporty, easygoing character that works well for everyday driving.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: There are two engines in the Elantra GT, one for each trim. The Base trim gets a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. It makes 161 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The Sport comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four making 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.
- Tech: The Tech Package includes a massive panoramic sunroof, navigation system, ventilated seats, Infinity premium audio system, and a Qi wireless charging pad.
- Safety: Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are standard on the Sport trim.
- Starting price: Base MSRP for the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is $19,350.
If you're buying used today, the 2017 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2021 inventory to mature.

This car is very clean and in good shape. Nice interior features with heated seats and Bluetooth audio. I hope I am right in believing that the car has good value. The one thing I wish is that it was a bit more sporty, but overall I am satisfied.

About the Hyundai Elantra GT
The Hyundai Elantra GT was the sportier version of the brand’s entry level car, though not the sportiest. The Elantra N now holds that title and Hyundai markets it as a separate vehicle, eliminating the GT entirely from the lineup as of the 2020 model year. The last Elantra GT was a five-door hatchback, which arrived in the 2013 model year. In the rest of the world the GT is marketed as the i30, and continues in production to this day.
What are the advantages of the Hyundai Elantra GT?
- Unique five-door bodystyle
- Fully independent rear suspension and turbo power in the GT Sport and GT N-Line
- Six-speed manual transmission offering
What is the best Hyundai Elantra GT model year?
Hyundai only sold the Elantra GT here for a short period of time, and over those few model years, these cars were sold in low numbers; estimates suggest that GT sales only made up five percent of the Elantra’s overall mix. The latest Elantra GT from between the 2018 redesign to 2020 was more useful in every dimension, besting all competitors for cargo space. It also offered 201hp with the GT Sport 2018) and N-Line (2019 - 2022).
What are the disadvantages of the Hyundai Elantra GT?
The Elantra GT’s base engine was described as “feeble,” so you’d want to avoid that unless you’re after the cheapest car possible. All of the popular features modern car buyers are after were reserved for the most expensive trim level, but that gets alleviated slightly on the used market.
Comparison: Is the Hyundai Elantra GT better than the Volkswagen Golf GTI?
The Golf GTI invented this entire sporty hatchback segment, but in later years it didn’t work very hard to maintain its position at the top of the heap. Performance-wise, the GTI wasn’t the GTI from the 1970s. Although it made more power than the Elantra GT, the thing that made the GTI so useful in the first place–its cargo space-was five percent smaller than the Elantra GT's.
Is the Hyundai Elantra GT a reliable car?
There’s only one recall directly related to the Elantra GT, and you have to go way back in time to find it. In 2013 and 2014 model years, the brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate, allowing the brake lights to remain illuminated, and also allow the shift lever in Elantra GTs with the automatic transmission to operate without the brake pedal being depressed. Chances are good that this lone recall has been completed, but it’s worth checking.
Is the Hyundai Elantra GT worth the cost?
You can still find certified pre-owned versions of the Elantra GT. With under 10,000 miles, we found a GT Sport advertised on CarGurus for $21,495 with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. That car was only $24,350 plus destination to start, so there’s probably some room to negotiate, though the CPO warranty adds a bit of value.
