Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT stands out as Hyundai’s most competent hatchback to date, and it aims to hit a useful middle ground for daily transportation. It offers the kind of practicality that makes hatchbacks appealing, with more usable cargo space than a sedan, while still keeping the sporty driving dynamics and fuel efficiency that can be lost in a crossover. It also fits the value-minded side of the segment, since hatchbacks generally cost less than typical crossover SUVs.
What makes this car distinctive is that it feels like a more fully developed hatchback than Hyundai’s earlier effort in this space. The 2018 Elantra GT is described as a standout small car that is well suited to compete with the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus hatch, and Subaru Impreza wagon. Owners also tend to praise its handling, comfort, value, and city driving manners, along with its sporty hatchback design.
There are limits to keep in mind, though. Some drivers say acceleration can be lacking, especially at higher speeds. Even so, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT’s blend of practicality, enjoyable driving character, and affordability gives it a clear identity for buyers who want something more versatile than a sedan without moving up to a crossover.

Acceleration is lacking but, overall, performance, comfort, mileage are good! Price was fair. Would recommend as a city car.

Base Elantra has good pick up 0-40 mph, but after 40 it strains. Base model is a good handling car and good value if buying it cheap. But new - people should opt for the turbo.. 2-3k more but includes better interior, push button, and way faster engine.

This car is great! I just need a small car, and prefer the versatility and sportiness of a hatchback. So far, seems to be a step up from my Ford Focus.

There are 178 listings available, which suggests you have a modest but workable pool of cars to compare.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its good handling, comfort, and value for money, and they also like its fun driving experience and sporty hatchback design. The overview points to a useful middle ground for daily transportation, with more cargo practicality than a sedan and better efficiency and driving feel than many crossovers.
With 42.1% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market also gives you a decent chance to find one that fits your budget.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT reliable?

The owner feedback also points to a car that feels good, comfortable, and value-oriented over time, with praise for its city manners and everyday usability. The expert review describes it as a reliable car for daily transportation and a refined, dependable daily driver.
Hyundai also notes that the Base automatic can be paired with a Tech Package, which adds convenience features that can make ownership easier if you find the right example.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is choosing a car that has been neglected or driven hard, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge on the hatch.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT?
At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with added equipment. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s features work as expected, since the trim split changes both equipment and driving character.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a USB port, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 60/40 split-fold rear bench seat, SiriusXM satellite radio, and manually adjustable front seats. The Sport adds LED head- and taillights, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, heated front seats, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a more upscale cabin treatment.
- Powertrain: The Base uses a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder with 161 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The Sport uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four with 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual or an optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are optional on the Base and standard on the Sport. Forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning are available on the Sport, but not on the Base.
- Infotainment: The cabin centers on an 8-inch Blue Link touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the Tech Package adds navigation, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, Infinity premium audio, and a Qi wireless charging pad.
- Fuel efficiency: The Base automatic is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 highway, 27 combined. The Sport with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is rated at 26 mpg city, 32 highway, 28 combined.
Which 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is offered in 2 trim levels: Base and Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the Elantra GT’s core strengths at the lowest entry price. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, a split-fold rear seat, and a practical hatchback layout, plus the Base’s 2.0-liter engine and available automatic transmission. It’s the trim to target if you care most about affordability and everyday usefulness.
- Sport: This is the better choice if you want the more powerful turbocharged engine, the upgraded suspension setup, and the richer standard equipment list. It also brings standard blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist, along with leather seating, heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control. If you want the best all-around version, this is the one to buy.
The Sport trim is the one that adds the broader safety and convenience package, while the Base keeps the price lower and the essentials intact.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT?
The market leans in your favor right now, with decent deal availability and a price trend that has moved lower over the past year.
- Deal availability: 42.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 178 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.52% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,762, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT's resale value?
The current average of $12,010 sits slightly below last year's $12,320.
That tells you the market has softened, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. A lower current price can make ownership more affordable, yet it also suggests the car is not appreciating in the way some in-demand models do.
For a future seller, the key takeaway is that condition and trim choice will matter a lot. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should be easier to move than a rougher one, especially because shoppers in this segment are often comparing value closely.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT safe?
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT has not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are optional on the Base and standard on the Sport, while forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning are available on the Sport but not the Base.
That means you should pay close attention to trim level if safety tech matters to you, since the Base leaves some of the more advanced driver-assistance features off the table.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 42.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights it as a standout small car that delivers a useful middle ground of practicality, driving enjoyment, and affordability.
The bottom line: The 2018 model year makes sense if you want a hatchback that balances value, usability, and a more engaging driving feel than many small crossovers. If your priority is finding the best price, you can shop confidently here; if you want the strongest equipment mix, focus on well-kept Sport trims with the features you care about most.
