Is the Honda Pilot a good car?
Yes — the Honda Pilot is a strong choice if you want a roomy, family-friendly SUV with broad appeal and a consistently high owner score. The all-generations owner rating is 4.68/5 across every model year in the data.

36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Honda Pilot models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Honda Pilot as spacious, comfortable, and easy to live with, and the strongest years also earn praise for reliability and family-friendly usefulness. Expert commentary across the model years reinforces that practical, well-rounded character.
- Owners rate the Honda Pilot between 4.4 and 4.91 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, that combination points to a model that can be a sensible long-term ownership choice, especially when you choose carefully and verify maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used Honda Pilot?
Across all model years, at 74.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.4% |
| 2025 | 91.2% |
| 2024 | 89.1% |
| 2023 | 84.6% |
| 2022 | 77.9% |
| 2021 | 72.9% |
| 2020 | 69.2% |
| 2019 | 65.8% |
| 2018 | 63.5% |
| 2017 | 60.6% |
| 2016 | 59.5% |
| 2015 | 57.6% |
| 2014 | 55.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing suite
- Infotainment: larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel for all trim levels
- Fuel efficiency: The 2026 Pilot is estimated to return up to 22 mpg combined (19/27 mpg city/highway) with the FWD layout. With AWD, the EPA estimates a slight drop to 21 mpg combined (19/25 mpg city/highway), while the off-road-capable TrailSport drops by about another 1 mpg across the board.
Which Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2026 Honda Pilot offers these trims:
- Sport: The entry trim starts the lineup with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is available; it suits you if you want the most affordable way into the Pilot.
- EX-L: This trim adds leather seats and a removable second-row seat, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want comfort and flexibility.
- TrailSport: This version adds the off-road-oriented hardware and is the one to choose if you want the Pilot’s more rugged capability.
- Touring: This trim adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, and a hands-free power liftgate for a more upscale family setup.
- Black Edition: The top trim brings the most premium presentation in the lineup.
What Honda Pilot do most buyers choose?
The Honda Pilot years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 4,862 | 39% |
| 2025 | 4,352 | 38.8% |
| 2023 | 3,373 | 38.2% |
| 2026 | 2,997 | 38.5% |
| 2022 | 2,965 | 37.2% |
| 2021 | 2,622 | 36.3% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, newer features, and competitive pricing. When more listings are on the market, you also have more room to compare trims, colors, and deal quality.
What is the Honda Pilot's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $28,003 | −10.44% |
| 2018 | $18,062 | −8.26% |
| 2019 | $20,379 | −8.04% |
| 2020 | $22,151 | −7.58% |
| 2023 | $36,231 | −7.49% |
| 2017 | $16,826 | −6.44% |
| 2021 | $24,868 | −6.21% |
| 2025 | $42,028 | −5.19% |
| 2016 | $14,708 | −5.06% |
| 2024 | $38,678 | −4.8% |
| 2015 | $11,526 | −3.45% |
| 2014 | $10,773 | −3.12% |
Most Honda Pilot model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to avoid paying peak prices. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while the older models show smaller declines. That pattern suggests there are still solid opportunities across the lineup, especially if you’re flexible on model year.
The 2014, 2015, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Honda Pilot now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.19% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −4.8%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 38.8% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 39%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $38,678. The Honda Pilot offers a roomy cabin and a practical, family-friendly layout that make it easy to live with.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Under the hood of the 2026 Honda Pilot is the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as before. It produces 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
- Tech: For 2026, the Honda Pilot upgrades to a larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel for all trim levels.

Reviewed a 2013 Honda Pilot on Aug 20, 2025
The Honda Pilot was redesigned in 2009 with a slightly boxer look with larger windows pillars that result in more blind spots than previous models. This is due to government regulation. Outward visibility is affected by the changes, but it is not as bad as newer vehicles. The 250HP 6 is as strong as the earlier model and acceleration times are not affected by the additional weight in this generation. The car is smoother and quieter than both the 1st and the 3rd generation models. Handling is very good as well and outshine the 3rd generation pilots. Interior volume with both rows folded is very good at 87 cubic feet. All pilots are spacious, with the first taking the edge with 91. The pluses of this car is reliability, repair simplicity good handling, quiet interior, and precise steering. The Pilot falls a little short in acceleration and fuel mileage. Typical city gas mileage is 17 mpg with the 2wd and 15.5 with the 4wd versions. Higgway is 21 at 80 mph, which is today's cruise speed. Unless the car is towing, the engine transmission and brakes dont get tired. This car is a 4 star car. It does most things well,

CarGurus recommends the 2025 Honda Pilot
Summary
With 4,377 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,044, 37.9% of 2025 Honda Pilot listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2025 Honda Pilot 4.91 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
91.2% of 2025 Honda Pilot listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2025 Honda Pilot stands out as a roomy, relatively rugged three-row midsize SUV that is easy to live with. Honda keeps the formula simple for this model year with a single powertrain and a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Nearly all versions seat eight, and higher trims can be configured for seven passengers by removing the second-row center section. The Black Edition also returns to the top of the lineup for 2025 with blacked-out exterior trim and red interior accents.
That straightforward setup makes the 2025 Pilot appealing as a practical daily driver, especially for buyers who want plenty of cargo space and strong safety ratings. It is also described as having plenty of power to get up to speed without effort. The tradeoffs are familiar ones: fuel economy is unimpressive, the technology looks outdated, and the front passenger seat lacks adjustment.
