Is the Honda Pilot a good car?
Yes — the Honda Pilot is a strong choice if you want a roomy, family-friendly SUV with broad appeal and consistently positive owner feedback. The all-generations owner rating is 4.7/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the Pilot for its spacious cabin, comfortable ride, and family-friendly practicality. Reviewers also commonly highlight its cargo space and easy-to-live-with character, which help it work well as a daily family hauler.
Expert reviews rate the 2020 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs across recent expert-reviewed years center on fuel economy, engine performance, and some interior or tech impressions. Even so, the Pilot’s overall formula stays compelling because it delivers space, comfort, and usefulness in a straightforward package.
32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Honda Pilot models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Honda Pilot as spacious, comfortable, and practical, with strong family appeal across the lineup. Expert reviews also reinforce its everyday usability and well-rounded character.
- Owners rate the Honda Pilot between 4.4 and 4.9 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is most worth watching on older examples, where history checks and maintenance records matter most.
What should I look for when buying a used Honda Pilot?
Across all model years, at 74.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.5% |
| 2025 | 91.1% |
| 2024 | 89.1% |
| 2023 | 84.3% |
| 2022 | 77.8% |
| 2021 | 73% |
| 2020 | 69.5% |
| 2019 | 66% |
| 2018 | 63.6% |
| 2017 | 60.5% |
| 2016 | 59.4% |
| 2015 | 57.4% |
| 2014 | 56.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing suite
- Infotainment: larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 22 mpg combined (19/27 mpg city/highway) with the FWD layout; 21 mpg combined (19/25 mpg city/highway) with AWD
Which Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2026 Honda Pilot offers these trims:
- Sport: Entry trim with front-wheel drive standard, all-wheel drive available, and the same 3.5-liter V6 shared across the lineup.
- EX-L: Adds front-wheel drive standard, all-wheel drive available, and a removable second-row seat with leather seats; this is the best-value trim for many shoppers.
- TrailSport: Adds all-wheel drive standard and decent off-road abilities.
- Touring: Adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, and a hands-free power liftgate.
- Black Edition: Top trim with the most upscale presentation.
What Honda Pilot do most buyers choose?
The Honda Pilot years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 4,910 | 33.6% |
| 2025 | 4,408 | 33.7% |
| 2023 | 3,414 | 33.2% |
| 2026 | 3,036 | 33.5% |
| 2022 | 3,004 | 32.5% |
| 2021 | 2,679 | 31.8% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they combine broad availability with strong deal shares, giving you more choices when shopping. They also sit close to the newest generation, which helps them stay attractive to buyers who want modern features and a familiar Pilot formula.
What is the Honda Pilot's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $27,972 | −10.39% |
| 2019 | $20,339 | −8.04% |
| 2018 | $18,074 | −7.97% |
| 2023 | $36,158 | −7.62% |
| 2020 | $22,138 | −7.43% |

| 2016 | $14,693 | −5.11% |
| 2024 | $38,636 | −4.76% |
| 2015 | $11,470 | −4.05% |
| 2014 | $10,797 | −2.41% |
Most model years are showing lower prices than they were a year ago, which is good news if you're shopping used. The biggest drops are concentrated in several newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples have moved down more gradually. Overall, the pattern points to improving value for buyers rather than rising prices.
The 2014, 2015, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Tech: For 2026, the Honda Pilot upgrades to a larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel for all trim levels.
- Safety: All Pilot trims come with the Honda Sensing suite of safety features, which includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a driver-attention monitor, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high-beam headlights.
- Starting price: Prices for the 2026 Honda Pilot start at $43,690 for the entry-level Sport trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Reviewed a 2013 Honda Pilot on Aug 20, 2025
The Honda Pilot was redesigned in 2009 with a slightly boxer look with larger windows pillars that result in more blind spots than previous models. This is due to government regulation. Outward visibility is affected by the changes, but it is not as bad as newer vehicles. The 250HP 6 is as strong as the earlier model and acceleration times are not affected by the additional weight in this generation. The car is smoother and quieter than both the 1st and the 3rd generation models. Handling is very good as well and outshine the 3rd generation pilots. Interior volume with both rows folded is very good at 87 cubic feet. All pilots are spacious, with the first taking the edge with 91. The pluses of this car is reliability, repair simplicity good handling, quiet interior, and precise steering. The Pilot falls a little short in acceleration and fuel mileage. Typical city gas mileage is 17 mpg with the 2wd and 15.5 with the 4wd versions. Higgway is 21 at 80 mph, which is today's cruise speed. Unless the car is towing, the engine transmission and brakes dont get tired. This car is a 4 star car. It does most things well,

CarGurus recommends the 2025 Honda Pilot
Summary
With 4,377 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,044, 37.9% of 2025 Honda Pilot listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2025 Honda Pilot 4.91 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
91.2% of 2025 Honda Pilot listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2025 Honda Pilot stands out as a roomy, relatively rugged three-row midsize SUV that is easy to live with. Honda keeps the formula simple for this model year with a single powertrain and a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Nearly all versions seat eight, and higher trims can be configured for seven passengers by removing the second-row center section. The Black Edition also returns to the top of the lineup for 2025 with blacked-out exterior trim and red interior accents.
That straightforward setup makes the 2025 Pilot appealing as a practical daily driver, especially for buyers who want plenty of cargo space and strong safety ratings. It is also described as having plenty of power to get up to speed without effort. The tradeoffs are familiar ones: fuel economy is unimpressive, the technology looks outdated, and the front passenger seat lacks adjustment.
