That puts the model in a broad price band that stretches from older, budget-friendly examples to much newer, higher-priced ones. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.

Expert reviews rate the 2020 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs that show up in recent expert coverage center on fuel economy, engine performance, and infotainment polish. Even so, the Pilot remains compelling because it delivers space, comfort, and utility in a package that works well for daily family use.
28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Honda Pilot models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Pilot's spaciousness, comfort, and family-friendly usefulness as core strengths. Across the model years, feedback also highlights its practical design and easy daily livability.
- Owners rate the Honda Pilot between 4.4 and 4.91 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk looks manageable overall, especially if you choose a well-maintained example and verify service history carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used Honda Pilot?
Across all model years, at 74.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.8% |
| 2025 | 90.8% |
| 2024 | 89.3% |
| 2023 | 84.3% |
| 2022 | 78.6% |
| 2021 | 72.4% |
| 2020 | 70.2% |
| 2019 | 67.5% |
| 2018 | 65.1% |
| 2017 | 60% |
| 2016 | 59.3% |
| 2015 | 56.6% |
| 2014 | 56.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing suite
- Infotainment: larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel for all trim levels
- Fuel efficiency: The 2026 Pilot is estimated to return up to 22 mpg combined (19/27 mpg city/highway) with the FWD layout. With AWD, the EPA estimates a slight drop to 21 mpg combined (19/25 mpg city/highway), while the off-road-capable TrailSport drops by about another 1 mpg across the board.
Which Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2026 Honda Pilot offers these trims:
- Sport: The entry-level trim starts the lineup with front-wheel drive and the core Pilot formula, making it the starting point if you want the lowest entry price.
- EX-L: This trim adds a removable second-row seat and leather seats, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want comfort and flexibility.
- TrailSport: This trim adds the Pilot's decent off-road abilities and stands apart for buyers who want a more adventurous setup.
- Touring: This trim adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, and a hands-free power liftgate for shoppers who want more convenience and upscale features.
- Black Edition: This top trim brings the most premium presentation in the lineup.
What Honda Pilot do most buyers choose?
The Honda Pilot years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 4,197 | 30% |
| 2025 | 3,363 | 29.8% |
| 2023 | 3,129 | 30.1% |
| 2022 | 3,020 | 29.5% |
| 2021 | 2,465 | 28.6% |
| 2026 | 2,352 | 29.5% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a wider selection of trims, prices, and equipment levels. They also sit close enough to the current generation to feel modern while still offering used-car value.
What is the Honda Pilot's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $29,089 | −9.18% |
| 2020 | $22,630 | −8.07% |
| 2018 | $18,477 | −7.66% |
| 2019 | $20,925 | −7.64% |
| 2015 | $11,747 | −7.38% |
| 2017 | $17,227 | −6.76% |
| 2023 | $37,623 | −5.78% |
| 2021 | $25,531 | −5.69% |
| 2016 | $15,001 | −5.56% |
| 2025 | $42,725 | −5.49% |
| 2024 | $39,396 | −4.94% |
| 2014 | $10,874 | −1.53% |
Most model years are moving down in price, which is good news if you're shopping used. The newer years are also seeing meaningful declines, so recent-model buyers may find better value than they did a year ago. The smallest drops are concentrated at the low and high ends of the lineup.
The 2014, 2024, and 2025 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Honda Pilot now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.49% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −4.94%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 29.8% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 30%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $39,396. The Honda Pilot offers roomy, family-friendly space that makes it easy to live with every day.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Under the hood of the 2026 Honda Pilot is the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as before. It produces 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The touring model is perfect for me. It has a lot of the luxury features I wanted without the price tag for the elite.

Reviewed a 2013 Honda Pilot on Aug 20, 2025
The Honda Pilot was redesigned in 2009 with a slightly boxer look with larger windows pillars that result in more blind spots than previous models. This is due to government regulation. Outward visibility is affected by the changes, but it is not as bad as newer vehicles. The 250HP 6 is as strong as the earlier model and acceleration times are not affected by the additional weight in this generation. The car is smoother and quieter than both the 1st and the 3rd generation models. Handling is very good as well and outshine the 3rd generation pilots. Interior volume with both rows folded is very good at 87 cubic feet. All pilots are spacious, with the first taking the edge with 91. The pluses of this car is reliability, repair simplicity good handling, quiet interior, and precise steering. The Pilot falls a little short in acceleration and fuel mileage. Typical city gas mileage is 17 mpg with the 2wd and 15.5 with the 4wd versions. Higgway is 21 at 80 mph, which is today's cruise speed. Unless the car is towing, the engine transmission and brakes dont get tired. This car is a 4 star car. It does most things well,

Why it stands out
The 2022 Honda Pilot stands out as a practical three-row SUV that blends family-friendly space with a long list of standard equipment. It is part of the third generation, which is defined by tech upgrades and additional safety features, and the 2022 model closes that run with standard LED headlights and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a used midsize SUV that feels modern without moving into a newer, more expensive generation.
What helps the 2022 Honda Pilot remain distinctive is how much it offers across the lineup. Honda Sensing is standard on all trim levels, and the Pilot also includes features such as a hands-free power tailgate, dual automatic climate control, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The cabin is a strong point as well, with owners praising its spacious interior, smooth ride, and quietness, while the available tech and safety content add to its family appeal.
There are still a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The buying guide notes that interior materials can feel cheap, and fuel economy is only average. Even so, the 2022 Honda Pilot remains attractive for shoppers who value space, comfort, and a well-rounded feature set more than flash.
