Customers say

Citroen vehicles are often celebrated for their comfort, unique design, and fuel efficiency. Owners appreciate the spacious interiors and handling, making them ideal for city driving. However, many drivers report concerns with build quality and reliability issues, particularly with electrical components and suspension systems. Overall, while Citroen provides an enjoyable and economical driving experience, potential buyers should be mindful of their maintenance and repair considerations.

Reviewed a 1990 Citroen XM on Mar 11, 2008

Introduction The XM was Citroëns flagship from its launch in 1989 to the quiet death in the year 2000, successor to the classic CX and predecessor to the C6 and a sales disaster despite its long life. These are now quite rare but thanks to the awesome depreciation cheap when compared to similar vehicles from other manufacturers, obviously excluding the even cheaper Peugeot 605 which the XM shares e.g. the powertrains and a lot of the shady electrics with. Quality and reliability These cars do rust despite quite extensive rust protection, but the body panels are generally unaffected. This particular one has had both its front and rear subframes replaced and some areas welded. Otherwise quality is fine, it certainly isn't very good for a vehicle in this class, but much better than some other cars of similar age, parts generally don't come off all by themselves and even the doors sound solid. The reliability could be better, even though nothing major has yet gone wrong the electrics are some of the worst you can find, the low quality of mostly everything related to the electrics resulting from cost-cutting and a hasty release makes for interesting problems (and apparently engine fires). These are fortunately generally minor (the electric problems, not the fires), but can nonetheless be quite irritating. The basics apart from the aforementioned are actually supposed to reliable, the suspension may get stuck in sports mode but rarely fails and mostly everything else is quite conventional. Generally the XM series one is rolling somewhere between a hobby and an everyday car, getting closer to the former every day, the series two is the more sensible although slightly more boring choice if you don't like surprises. Style As a big Citroën the XM had a lot to live up to in this department, but time has shown it did well. The design still doesn't look outdated, just odd the way it always did. It is a basically good-looking vehicle, not a piece of art like a DS, but at least to me every bit as appealing as a CX. The rear looks a bit out of place, but is very different from the mass and contributes to the originality of the entity. The side view has an unnecessary touch of heaviness, almost as if the car was fat, which I consider a design failure, but it doesn't kill the overall soundness. The "band of light" isn't a perfect solution either, it does give excellent visibility in every direction but destroys the potential for a really sleek look. Visibility As already mentioned you do get an excellent field of view, but what about the headlights? Can the projector-type low-beams of such a very low height provide enough light for driving after dusk? The answer is an indecisive no, you will see something of the road, but very little, perhaps something can be done by rewiring the bulbs straight to the battery and replacing the plastic projector plates, but the only effective means is installing xenon lights, which unfortunately is illegal. The high-beams are somewhat adequate at least when compared to the low-beams, but certainly not good. Performance The basic 2,0i models keep up with traffic but aren't fun in the way the more spirited alternatives, the 2,0 turbo and 3,0 V6. The Turbo C.T. (petrol turbo) is merely around 145 hp and 225 Nm but still propels the car into efficient overtaking and from 0 to 100 km/h in less than nine seconds. This engine was only introduced in 1993, however it seemed worth the hassle of the replacement process. The obvious advantages of this engine when compared to the V6s are fuel economy and insurance costs. Suspension and comfort The suspension is the simple Hydractive 1, which adjusts the ride according to the circumstances, it goes into sport mode (harder) when driving hard and to normal mode (soft) when not. The adjustments happen quickly thanks to a heap of sensors that send information to the separate suspension computer (situated next to the ECU) that controls magnetic valves to put the two extra suspension spheres into or out of the system when deemed necessary. The sensors keep detecting an array of things, including steering wheel and pedal positions, but you will have to read up on that somewhere else, I intend to keep this review short. The sound level even in the basic models is quite low although the V6s appear to have more sound insulation, none of these are still quite a match for some new cars, but suspension comfort is something pretty much no new car lesser than a C6 can touch. Maybe one can suffer the road in a basic Japanese cart or German sedan if you don't know of any better, but it is all in the past once you get the chance to get accustomed to a big Citroën. Yes, it takes some accustomization, even though the XM isn't as quirky as say a CX it still has a slightly different approach. Interiors are slightly dark and bland, but generally no worse visually than what the competition has to offer, whilst retaining good comfort. Especially the newer seats are harder than what could be expected, but not too hard. The one-spoke steering wheel on the early series one cars is superior to the later two-spokes and the fat series two four spokes, both when it comes to looks, practicality and visibility. Conclusion I probably view the world through a green layer of LHM+, but despite all the small details that go wrong on a series one XM I find it a very nice car indeed. An excellent choice for those who can’t afford a C6 and don’t feel ready for a CX, for someone who just wants something a bit different from the usual variety of big German cars. Very good value for money and the prices probably won’t drop anymore for the oldest ones. It makes a good hobby too, being nice and different but still not very unreliable or extremely complicated. Top Gear guesstimated it to be a future classic, and I couldn’t agree more, nothing appears to be in its way to the line of its great predecessors.

A good sensible family car. A great load lugger with the back seats taken out. Economical and reliable. Build quality was average. Cheap to run and insure. Its french so a bit querky- the cheaper alternative to a Scenic. We owned two so they cant be too bad.- mind you Id stick to diesel rather than petrol.

Performance: acceleration - good braking - good. Breaks need a lot of maintenance though handling - good Build Quality: has it needed repairs? - Some electrical components need repair every now and then Appearance: both interior and exterior styling meet requirements. Mileage is rather good and the fun factor is excellent.

Best Executive Sedan, I've ever driven. Hydropneumatic suspension gives the smoothest drive possible. The engine is a bit underpowered but it's still enough. It comes with a very good set of standard features with a reasonable price tag, which makes the car a good buy. It also has 7 airbags which makes it very safe. The build quality of the car is also very good and overall the car feels German.
