Is the Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Yes — the Chevrolet Malibu is a strong used-car choice if you want a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan with easy-to-use tech and broad everyday appeal. The all-generations owner rating is 4.33/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Malibu for its smooth ride, comfort, spacious interior, and user-friendly technology. Across the model years, the recurring themes are a quiet, comfortable cabin, good fuel economy, and straightforward features that make it easy to live with.
Expert reviews rate the 2017 and 2016 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs show up in acceleration, refinement, and some trim-level feature content, especially in recent years where the standard engine is described as lackluster and the car trails some rivals for polish.
31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Chevrolet Malibu models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Malibu’s comfort, smooth ride, and easy-to-use features as part of its appeal. Later model years also earn praise for stronger reliability than earlier front-drive Malibus, which helps the car stand out as a practical everyday sedan.
- Owners rate the Chevrolet Malibu between 4.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership picture is strongest in later model years, while earlier front-drive examples deserve closer history and condition checks.
What should I look for when buying a used Chevrolet Malibu?
Across all model years, at 72.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2025 | 84.5% |
| 2024 | 82.9% |
| 2023 | 80.6% |

| 2017 | 52% |
| 2016 | 51.4% |
| 2015 | 52.2% |
| 2014 | 52.5% |

- Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone projection capability
- Fuel efficiency: 46 mpg in combined driving
Which Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu offers these trims:
- L: The entry point, with the Malibu’s core midsize-sedan formula and the lowest starting price in the lineup.
- LS: A step up from the base model for shoppers who want a little more equipment while staying value-focused.
- LT: The best-value trim for many buyers, balancing features and price while also serving as the launch point for some appearance and equipment upgrades.
- Hybrid: The efficiency-focused choice, pairing Malibu space with the hybrid powertrain and strong combined fuel economy.
- Premier: The top trim, adding the most powerful turbocharged engine and the most upscale equipment, plus access to the Driver Confidence packages.
What Chevrolet Malibu do most buyers choose?
The Chevrolet Malibu years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 8,591 | 35.1% |
| 2023 | 7,389 | 33.8% |
| 2025 | 6,399 | 36.3% |
| 2022 | 3,740 | 30.6% |
| 2021 | 2,550 | 29.1% |
| 2019 | 2,193 | 28.6% |
These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they offer a strong mix of newer features, broader availability, and a wide range of prices. More listings also give you more chances to compare condition, mileage, and deal quality.
What is the Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $20,018 | −10.81% |
| 2020 | $13,520 | −9.36% |
| 2024 | $18,771 | −8.7% |
| 2022 | $16,081 | −8.55% |
| 2023 | $16,796 | −8.03% |
| 2019 | $12,727 | −6.97% |
| 2021 | $14,655 | −6.81% |
| 2017 | $10,804 | −6.33% |
| 2015 | $8,343 | −6.25% |

| 2018 | $11,946 | −4.36% |
| 2014 | $7,741 | −2.67% |
Most Malibu model years are down year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used at a lower entry price. The newer models show some of the sharpest declines, while the older ones move more gradually. That pattern gives shoppers a wider spread of value opportunities across the lineup.
The 2014, 2018, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Chevrolet Malibu safe?
- 2017: 8/10

Reviewed a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu on Mar 1, 2026
I purchased a 2020 Chevy Malibu on February 14th, 2024. Since then, the vehicle has been plagued with issues. The check engine light is constantly on, and when a sensor fails, multiple problems seem to arise. For example, the first time the check engine light appeared, the dash dinged and displayed messages like “steering assist reduced, drive with care,” while all the gauges would jump around. It also showed “low fuel,” despite the tank being full, and the message “service ESC.” The root cause was the throttle body, which needed to be replaced. Subsequently, similar issues occurred, and different parts had to be replaced, including the mass airflow sensor, the accelerator pedal, the brake vacuum pump sensor, the brake vacuum pump, and components related to the charging system. At one point, there was a ground issue. Then there is the constant “shift into park” after parking the car. Overall, this car has been nothing but trouble, and I would not recommend it to anyone.

The car has more features than you think for the price. Heated seats, android and apple auto, a turbo. It's not the pinical of luxury, but it definitely gives you enough if you are on a budget.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a roomy, value-oriented midsize sedan with a long-running reputation for being easy to live with. In this generation, Chevrolet gave the Malibu a sleeker shape and a larger, more open-feeling back seat, while also making the car more sophisticated than the one it replaced. It is also notable for offering a broad mix of powertrains and trims over the years, along with a useful set of technology and safety features that helped keep it competitive.
For 2023, the Malibu was more or less a carry-over from 2022. That means it retained the generation’s standard 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and it continued to return 30 mpg combined. The car also kept its seven-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the available eight-inch screen remained part of the upper-trim setup. Chevrolet had already added Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity in 2021, and active safety features such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and forward collision warnings were made standard in 2022.
What makes the 2023 Malibu appealing is the combination of space, straightforward features, and relatively strong reliability for this generation. It is described as a good deal and a larger car than many rivals, and late-model examples may still be covered by the manufacturer’s three-year/36,000-mile warranty. The main tradeoff is that it is not as refined as some competitors, and reviewers found the standard engine’s acceleration lackluster. Even so, for buyers who want a practical sedan with a comfortable cabin and a solid ownership record, the 2023 Malibu has a clear, uncomplicated appeal.
