Which BMW 8 Series trim should I buy?

The 2023 BMW 8 Series offers these trims:

• 840i: The entry point brings the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, rear-wheel drive, eight-speed automatic transmission, standard 12.3-inch touchscreen, BMW Live Cockpit Professional, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the clean, driver-focused cabin layout. It suits you if you want the most accessible way into the lineup and a strong balance of performance and equipment.
• 840i xDrive: This version adds all-wheel drive to the 840i formula, making it the better pick if you want the same core setup with extra traction.
• M850i xDrive: This trim adds the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, more power, and the more aggressive performance character that comes with BMW’s higher-output grand tourer.
• M8 Competition: This is the performance flagship, adding the M-specific eight-speed automatic, AWD, and the most extreme power output in the lineup.
• Alpina B8 Gran Coupe: This Gran Coupe-only model adds a more luxurious character, 612 hp, and a higher-speed grand touring focus. It is the best-value choice if you want the most distinctive blend of performance and comfort at the top end.

What BMW 8 Series do most buyers choose?

The BMW 8 Series years with the most listings are 2023, 2025, and 2022.

These higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they offer a wider selection and more pricing competition. That usually makes it easier to compare body styles, trims, and deal quality before you buy.

What is the BMW 8 Series's resale value?

The table shows broad downward movement across the lineup, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The steepest drops are concentrated in the newer model years, while the older years show smaller declines. That creates a market where recent examples can offer stronger value than their original pricing suggests.

The 2019, 2021, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the BMW 8 Series safe?

• 2023: 6/10
• 2021: 8/10
• 2020: 8/10

For the safest used buy, the 2020 and 2021 models both post the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
