Used BMW 5 Series for Sale nearClarkson, NY

How much does the BMW 5 Series cost in today's market?

Used BMW 5 Series prices span a wide range depending on model year. Here's what the market looks like right now:

The BMW 5 Series' current nationwide average price is $27,512, and its lowest point over the past year was $25,701. Recently, prices have come down for the 2024, 2025, and 2026 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.

Is the BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — the BMW 5 Series is a strong choice if you want a luxury sedan with broad owner appeal and a long-running reputation for driving enjoyment. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.

Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious interior, smooth handling, and comfortable, well-equipped cabins. They also appreciate the advanced technology and refined driving experience, especially on longer trips.

Expert reviews rate the 2018 and 2026 models among the highest across all years.

The main tradeoffs in recent expert reviews center on complex technology, occasional voice-assistant quirks, and cargo space that can feel limited. Some newer versions also lean more toward comfort than the sharper sport-sedan feel that helped define the nameplate.

31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Are BMW 5 Series models reliable?

Owners consistently praise the BMW 5 Series for its strong performance, luxurious comfort, and refined driving feel. Expert reviews also point to a well-rounded blend of technology, ride quality, and premium character across the lineup.

• Owners rate the BMW 5 Series between 4 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is worth weighing carefully, especially on older examples where repair history and maintenance records can make a big difference.

What should I look for when buying a used BMW 5 Series?

Across all model years, at 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says it should return 28 mpg in combined driving, and we averaged 26.5 mpg on our Southern California testing loop.

Which BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series offers these trims:

• 530i: The entry model uses mild-hybrid technology, rear-wheel drive, and the BMW Curved Display with a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display; it suits you if you want the most accessible way into the lineup.
• 540i: This trim adds a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, and a more refined, effortless driving character; it is the best-value trim for many shoppers who want stronger performance without stepping into the top performance models.
• 550e: This plug-in hybrid brings electrified powertrain flexibility and sits above the gas models for buyers who want a more advanced powertrain.
• i5: The all-electric model broadens the lineup with battery-electric driving.
• i5 M60: This performance-oriented electric trim adds a more powerful EV setup for shoppers who want quicker acceleration.
• M5: The high-performance sedan adds the most serious performance hardware in the lineup.
• M5 Touring: This wagon body style adds extra cargo versatility while keeping the M5 performance focus.

What BMW 5 Series do most buyers choose?

The BMW 5 Series years with the most listings are 2022, 2023, and 2018.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also sit in the part of the lineup where the 5 Series offers a strong mix of modern features and used-car value.

What is the BMW 5 Series's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, and several recent ones show double-digit declines. That pattern can work in your favor if you want a newer 5 Series at a lower used price than it carried a year ago. The smallest changes are clustered among the older model years, while the newest entries show some of the steepest drops.

The 2017, 2014, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the BMW 5 Series safe?

• 2026: 9/10
• 2024: 6/10
• 2021: 9/10
• 2018: 9/10
• 2017: 9/10

The 2026 model includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, creating an Assisted Driving system.

For the safest used buy, the 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2026 models all post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used BMW 5 Series now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2026 model is at −12.03% versus a year ago, and the 2025 model is at −13.97%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2022 model has the most listings at a current average price of $32,677. The BMW 5 Series offers a refined cabin, strong road manners, and a balanced mix of luxury and performance that has long defined the nameplate.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: Fortified with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, the 540i xDrive is effortlessly smooth, swift, and civilized. The engine makes 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, bumping to 398 lb-ft when the eBoost 48-volt mild-hybrid system’s electric motor offers assistance.
• Tech: It houses a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display; BMW Operating System 8.5 is the software that powers it.
• Safety: This version of the 5 Series has adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, and together they create an Assisted Driving system.
• Starting price: The 2026 BMW 5 Series models include the 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring. Prices range from $59,875 to $125,275, including the destination charge and, in the case of the M5 models, a gas-guzzler tax.

If you're buying used today, the 2022 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

How does the 2018 BMW 5 Series compare to the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Our experts score the 2018 BMW 5 Series 8.3/10 and the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 8/10. The BMW brings stronger efficiency in the spec table, along with a lower average used price and more listings to shop. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class counters with a slightly higher good-and-great deal share and a higher accident-free share, so your best pick depends on whether you value lower cost or a cleaner history profile more.
