Is the BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the BMW 5 Series is a strong choice if you want a luxury sedan that blends performance, comfort, and technology.
The all-generations owner rating is 4.58/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the 5 Series for its powerful performance, luxurious interior, and smooth handling. They also value the comfortable, well-equipped cabins and the advanced technology that makes the car feel modern and refined. Across the model years, the 5 Series keeps earning praise for being enjoyable on daily drives and longer trips alike.
Expert reviews rate the 2018 and 2026 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs are the complexity of the technology, the high ownership costs, and the fact that some recent versions lean more toward comfort than sharpness. Some recent expert reviews also point to styling that may divide opinions and cargo space that feels limited.
34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 5 Series models reliable?
Owners consistently rate the BMW 5 Series highly, and the strongest feedback centers on its smooth driving character, strong performance, and upscale cabin. Expert reviews also repeatedly highlight the model’s comfort, refinement, and broad feature content.
- Owners rate the BMW 5 Series between 4.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is worth weighing carefully because some model years bring more complex systems and higher maintenance exposure than others.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 5 Series?
Across all model years, at 73.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 97.2% |
| 2025 | 95% |
| 2024 | 89.9% |

| 2017 | 58.3% |
| 2016 | 60.4% |
| 2015 | 60.6% |
| 2014 | 59.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: 2026 540i xDrive includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system, and the Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant.
- Infotainment: 2026 BMW Curved Display with a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, powered by BMW Operating System 8.5, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says it should return 28 mpg in combined driving, and we averaged 26.5 mpg on our Southern California testing loop.
Which BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2026 BMW 5 Series offers these trims:
- 530i: The entry model uses rear-wheel drive and mild-hybrid technology, and it suits you if you want the most accessible way into the lineup.
- 540i: This is the best-value trim, adding the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, and a stronger mix of refinement and effortless speed.
- 550e: This plug-in hybrid broadens the lineup for shoppers who want electrified power.
- i5: This all-electric model expands the range for buyers who want a battery-powered 5 Series.
- i5 M60: This performance-focused electric trim adds a more athletic character.
- M5: This high-performance model brings the most serious performance hardware in the lineup.
- M5 Touring: This wagon body style adds extra versatility to the M5 formula.
What BMW 5 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 5 Series years with the most listings are 2022, 2023, and 2019.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 1,501 | 37.8% |
| 2023 | 1,399 | 38% |
| 2019 | 1,362 | 37.8% |
| 2018 | 1,362 | 37.6% |
| 2024 | 1,251 | 38.6% |

| 2016 | $12,160 | −8.07% |
| 2021 | $28,678 | −7.79% |
| 2023 | $37,408 | −7.68% |
| 2020 | $25,144 | −7.05% |

| 2014 | $10,687 | −5.65% |

That pattern suggests you can often get more car for the money if you shop the used market carefully.
The 2017, 2014, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Sweet-spot year: The 2022 model has the most listings at a current average price of $33,188. The BMW 5 Series offers a refined cabin, strong road manners, and a balanced mix of performance and luxury that has long defined the nameplate.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Fortified with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, the 540i xDrive is effortlessly smooth, swift, and civilized, and the engine makes 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, bumping to 398 lb-ft when the eBoost 48-volt mild-hybrid system’s electric motor offers assistance.
- Tech: It houses a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and in addition, the 5 Series includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
- Safety: This version of the 5 Series has adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, and our test car had the Driving Assistance Professional option package, which adds steering-related driver assistance features governing lane changes and supporting evasive maneuvers, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant.
- Starting price: The 2026 BMW 5 Series models range from $59,875 to $125,275, including the destination charge and, in the case of the M5 models, a gas-guzzler tax.
If you're buying used today, the 2022 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Customers say
The BMW 5 Series is highly regarded for its powerful performance, luxurious interior, and smooth handling across all model years. Owners appreciate the sporty yet refined driving experience, making it enjoyable for both daily use and longer trips. Many praise the comfortable and well-equipped interiors, along with advanced technology features. However, some drivers express concerns about high maintenance costs, limited rear seat space in some models, and the complexity of the iDrive system, which can be confusing. Overall, it remains a favorite among those seeking a blend of luxury and performance.

Great features, very comfortable, plenty of power. Just a solid vehicle for the price point all the way around, I love it and I don’t understand why they don’t cost more for what you get. Way under valued

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW 5 Series 4.95 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW 5 Series stands out for adding BMW’s updated hybrid drivetrain to the lineup, bringing a new plug-in trim for the year in the 530e. That makes frugality part of the appeal, since this plug-in hybrid is described as the lowest-priced 5 Series you can get. For buyers who want a midsize luxury sport sedan with a more efficiency-minded option, that combination gives the 2018 model a distinctive place in the range.
Beyond the hybrid addition, BMW’s focus for the 5 Series has shifted more toward luxury than sport. That helps explain why the car is appealing to shoppers looking for a refined, comfortable sedan rather than the sharpest possible performance edge. Owner feedback also points to a smooth ride, powerful performance, and luxurious features, though some drivers note engine noise and possible reliability concerns.
