Is the BMW 4 Series a good car?
Yes — the BMW 4 Series earns strong marks from owners across the lineup, and its appeal centers on performance, comfort, and style. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.

The trade-offs that show up most often are styling that can be polarizing, rear-seat space that feels tight in some versions, and ownership costs that can run high on premium models.
28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 4 Series models reliable?

- Owners rate the BMW 4 Series between 4.08 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For long-term ownership, you should plan for premium-car upkeep and verify service history carefully, especially on older examples.

| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2027 | 97% |
| 2026 | 94.1% |
| 2025 | 91.8% |

| 2016 | 51.9% |
| 2015 | 52.9% |

Which BMW 4 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 4 Series offers these trims:
- 430i: The 430i is the value play, with Sport or M Sport styling and a well-equipped setup that includes the core luxury and tech features most shoppers want.
- M440i: The M440i adds M Performance design, Shadowline trim treatment, and the stronger performance-oriented hardware and equipment that suit you if you want the most aggressive version.
What BMW 4 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 4 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|

| 2023 | 1,128 | 29.8% |
| 2024 | 1,121 | 29.9% |

| 2018 | 892 | 28% |
| 2016 | 853 | 28.7% |

What is the BMW 4 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | $12,252 | −9.7% |
| 2023 | $39,817 | −8.9% |
| 2019 | $19,215 | −8.26% |
| 2020 | $23,151 | −7.76% |
| 2022 | $36,216 | −5.37% |
| 2016 | $14,916 | −5.13% |
| 2017 | $16,200 | −4.91% |
| 2021 | $32,796 | −4.54% |
| 2024 | $43,665 | −4.53% |
| 2025 | $48,391 | −4.31% |
| 2018 | $17,625 | −4.31% |
| 2015 | $13,917 | −1.28% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used and benefit from softer pricing. The declines are especially pronounced in several newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples are changing more slowly. That pattern gives you more room to shop for value across the lineup.
The 2015, 2025, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used BMW 4 Series now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −4.31% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −4.53%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 30.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 29.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $48,391. The BMW 4 Series offers a premium-feeling cabin, distinctive styling, and an engaging driving character that make it appealing across model years.
Consider waiting if:

- Tech: The iDrive 7 system also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and a cloud-based navigation system kept current by over-the-air updates.
- Safety: The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, an Active Driving Assistant that combines the adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance and lane-change assistance technologies, and an emergency stop assistance system that can bring the car to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
- Starting price: BMW does include its Ultimate Care program for all new 4 Series Gran Coupes, but the complimentary maintenance plan, which covers all scheduled services during the first three years or 36,000 miles of driving, doesn't do much to offset the car's high price tag.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2028 inventory to mature.

Absolutely love it. I wanted the 2020 convertible as it was the last year that the retractable hardtop was offered. Car was in excellent condition. And it being an M4 certainly sweetened the deal.

Bought CPO. Its my first BMW, but compares reasonably well to Mercedes C-Class and Audi A5 Sportback. Of the three, I prefer the Audi interior. It feels large and roomy inside and it drives nicely and has plenty of pick up if you floor it. The User interactions with the Infotainment system are reasonably intuitive. Some customizations require dealer intervention, but thats a minor niggle.

CarGurus recommends the 2024 BMW 4 Series

Summary
With 1,129 currently listed for sale and an average price of $43,634.00, 33.1% of 2024 BMW 4 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 BMW 4 Series 5 / 5 stars.
88.5% of 2024 BMW 4 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2024 BMW 4 Series stands out for blending coupe-like style with a premium, well-equipped cabin and a strong emphasis on driving enjoyment. BMW’s second-generation design gives it a much more distinct character than before, with a vertical, oversized kidney grille, a more muscular look, and extra length over the first-generation model. It also shares most of its mechanical and interior parts with the contemporary 3 Series, but the 4 Series is positioned as the more expressive, more individual choice. Buyers also get a broad spread of body styles, including coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe versions.
For 2024, the 4 Series offers turbocharged power and standard automatic transmission across the range. The 430i uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower, while the M440i xDrive uses a 3.0-liter inline six with mild-hybrid technology and 386 horsepower. Standard equipment is generous, with LED headlights, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SensaTec upholstery, power front sport seats, a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and satellite navigation. The M440i adds M Sport suspension and brakes, run-flat tires, an M steering wheel, bespoke alloy wheels, Sensatec dashboard trim, a rear spoiler, and keyless entry.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The styling is divisive, and BMW’s premium pricing means some versions are expensive. Still, the 2024 BMW 4 Series is appealing if you want a luxury car that feels upscale, comes loaded with technology, and delivers the kind of performance and handling that have long been part of the model’s appeal.
