For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-documented car with a clean history and a thorough pre-purchase inspection.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 4 Series?
Across all model years, at 72.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 94.4% |
| 2025 | 91.8% |
| 2024 | 87.9% |
| 2023 | 86.8% |
| 2022 | 83.4% |
| 2021 | 78.1% |
| 2020 | 62.6% |
| 2019 | 55.9% |
| 2018 | 53.6% |
| 2017 | 55.1% |
| 2016 | 52.3% |
| 2015 | 52.9% |
| 2014 | 51.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, an active blind-spot warning system, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: Live Cockpit Professional pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and the iDrive 7 system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: Running the 430i Gran Coupe mainly in Comfort mode, we averaged 25.3 mpg on our evaluation loop, considerably less than the official EPA fuel economy estimate of 28 mpg in combined driving.
Which BMW 4 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 4 Series offers these trims:
- 430i: The 430i is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4 Series Gran Coupe experience with Sport or M Sport styling available, plus the model’s strong driving character and broad equipment base.
- M440i: The M440i adds M Performance design treatment, AWD xDrive at launch, and the extra equipment that includes adaptive cruise control, a premium sound system, and a head-up display.
What BMW 4 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 4 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 1,283 | 37% |
| 2023 | 1,131 | 36.2% |
| 2024 | 1,097 | 36.7% |
| 2017 | 886 | 31.8% |
| 2018 | 882 | 33.7% |
| 2016 | 851 | 32.4% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a wider selection of trims, prices, and deal opportunities. They also sit in the part of the lineup where newer tech and broader availability overlap.
What is the BMW 4 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | $39,689 | −9.59% |
| 2014 | $12,509 | −8.61% |
| 2020 | $22,991 | −7.22% |
| 2022 | $35,677 | −6.43% |
| 2024 | $43,078 | −6.14% |
| 2019 | $19,654 | −6.03% |
| 2021 | $32,708 | −5.94% |
| 2025 | $47,690 | −5.12% |
| 2017 | $16,208 | −4.32% |
| 2016 | $14,943 | −4.26% |
| 2018 | $17,764 | −3.96% |
| 2015 | $13,632 | −2.68% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The declines are especially noticeable in the newer years, while the older years show smaller drops. That mix suggests you can find value across the lineup, with recent models offering the biggest dollar savings from their prior pricing.
The 2015, 2018, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $47,690. The BMW 4 Series offers a distinctive, premium driving character that blends style with engaging road manners.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 430i Gran Coupe’s turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine makes 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, and BMW’s quoted 5.8 seconds from rest to 60 mph is credible.
- Tech: The iDrive 7 system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and a cloud-based navigation system kept current by over-the-air updates.
- Safety: The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, lane-change assistance, evasive steering assistance, front cross-traffic alert, and Traffic Jam Assistant.
- Starting price: The 430i test vehicle brought its price to $57,295, including a $995 destination charge.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Absolutely love it. I wanted the 2020 convertible as it was the last year that the retractable hardtop was offered. Car was in excellent condition. And it being an M4 certainly sweetened the deal.

Bought CPO. Its my first BMW, but compares reasonably well to Mercedes C-Class and Audi A5 Sportback. Of the three, I prefer the Audi interior. It feels large and roomy inside and it drives nicely and has plenty of pick up if you floor it. The User interactions with the Infotainment system are reasonably intuitive. Some customizations require dealer intervention, but thats a minor niggle.

CarGurus recommends the 2018 BMW 4 Series

Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW 4 Series 4.92 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW 4 Series stands out for blending coupe-like style with the practicality of a broader body-style lineup. BMW positioned the 4 Series as a sleeker successor to its two-door 3 Series models, and this generation kept that formula by sharing much of its mechanical and interior hardware with the contemporary 3 Series while sitting lower and looking more streamlined. It also added the Gran Coupe, a five-door hatchback version of the coupe, giving buyers an unusual mix of style and everyday usability.
For 2018, the first-generation 4 Series offered strong performance and a generous equipment list. The lineup included turbocharged 428i and 435i models, with rear-wheel drive standard and xDrive all-wheel drive available, plus a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission depending on version. Standard equipment was already solid, with features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats, and BMW’s iDrive system. An early 2017 update also brought LED headlights for all models and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive, which helps explain why the car appeals to buyers who want a premium feel with a sporty edge.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The convertible uses a folding metal roof, which adds weight and complexity and takes up some boot space when folded. More broadly, the 4 Series was never the cheapest choice in its class, and BMW repairs can be costly if something goes wrong. Even so, the 2018 model’s combination of quality, performance, luxury features, and distinctive styling makes it an appealing used buy for shoppers who value driving enjoyment as much as comfort.
