36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example with a clean history and service records, since repair costs can be meaningful if issues arise.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 4 Series?
Across all model years, at 72.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 95% |

| 2024 | 89% |
| 2023 | 87.1% |

| 2019 | 52.9% |
| 2018 | 50.6% |
| 2017 | 51.8% |
| 2016 | 51.5% |
| 2015 | 51.3% |
| 2014 | 50.4% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, an active blind-spot warning system, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: iDrive 7 with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an Intelligent Personal Assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: 25.3 mpg on our evaluation loop, considerably less than the official EPA fuel economy estimate of 28 mpg in combined driving.
Which BMW 4 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 4 Series offers these trims:
- 430i: The 430i is the value pick, with Sport or M Sport styling, rear-wheel drive at launch, and the core 4 Series driving experience.
- M440i: The M440i adds M Performance design, Shadowline trim treatment, all-wheel drive at launch, and the available Driving Assistance Professional Package, plus upgrades such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, lane-change assistance, evasive steering assistance, front cross-traffic alert, Traffic Jam Assistant, and available Parking Assistant Plus.
What BMW 4 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 4 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 1,342 | 36.7% |
| 2023 | 1,229 | 37.2% |
| 2024 | 1,156 | 37.5% |
| 2018 | 889 | 36.3% |
| 2022 | 883 | 37.6% |
| 2017 | 875 | 35.9% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they combine newer features, broader availability, and strong pricing relative to their original equipment levels. More listings also give you more room to compare trims, colors, and deal quality before you buy.
What is the BMW 4 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | $12,347 | −8.75% |
| 2023 | $39,592 | −8.63% |
| 2020 | $22,871 | −7.81% |
| 2019 | $19,194 | −6.97% |
| 2022 | $35,248 | −6.21% |
| 2025 | $47,473 | −6.07% |
| 2017 | $15,912 | −5.9% |
| 2021 | $32,620 | −5.83% |
| 2024 | $42,891 | −5.2% |
| 2026 | $54,633 | −5.04% |
| 2018 | $17,410 | −4.88% |
| 2016 | $14,752 | −4.78% |
| 2015 | $13,737 | −1.75% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it creates more room for value. The declines are generally in the mid-single digits, with a few larger drops near the top of the list. A handful of older years have changed less, which suggests they have been holding value a bit better than the rest.
The 2015, 2016, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the BMW 4 Series safe?
- 2022: 8/10
- 2021: 6/10
- 2015: 7/10
- 2014: 7/10
Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe.
For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used BMW 4 Series now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2026 model is at −5.04% versus a year ago, and the 2025 model is at −6.07%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 36.7% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $47,473. The BMW 4 Series offers a stylish, premium driving experience with strong road manners and a distinctive design that helps it stand apart from more conventional luxury cars.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 4 Series Gran Coupe and the Kia Stinger each weigh more than 4,000 pounds in top specification, but the BMW doesn't feel like it; our 430i RWD test vehicle had a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque.
- Tech: The standard Live Cockpit Professional setup pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and the iDrive 7 system also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe, and the M440i adds the available Driving Assistance Professional Package with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, lane-change assistance, evasive steering assistance, front cross-traffic alert, and Traffic Jam Assistant.
- Starting price: Our Sunset Orange 430i test vehicle included an extra-cost paint charge, leather seats, a Shadowline Package, a Premium Package, a Parking Assistance Package, an M Sport Package, and a Dynamic Handling Package, bringing its price to $57,295, including a $995 destination charge.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Absolutely love it. I wanted the 2020 convertible as it was the last year that the retractable hardtop was offered. Car was in excellent condition. And it being an M4 certainly sweetened the deal.

Bought CPO. Its my first BMW, but compares reasonably well to Mercedes C-Class and Audi A5 Sportback. Of the three, I prefer the Audi interior. It feels large and roomy inside and it drives nicely and has plenty of pick up if you floor it. The User interactions with the Infotainment system are reasonably intuitive. Some customizations require dealer intervention, but thats a minor niggle.

CarGurus recommends the 2018 BMW 4 Series

Summary
With 134 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,861, 24.6% of 2018 BMW 4 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW 4 Series 4.92 / 5 stars.
70.9% of 2018 BMW 4 Series listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW 4 Series stands out as a premium two-door coupe and convertible that emphasizes style, driving enjoyment, and a high level of equipment. It was designed to be lower and sleeker than the 3 Series it was derived from, and BMW also added the 4 Series Gran Coupe as a five-door hatchback-style body. For buyers who want a compact luxury car with a more distinctive shape than a conventional sedan, that combination gives the 4 Series a clear identity.
For 2018, the first-generation 4 Series had already received an early 2017 update that brought LED headlights for all models and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive. The lineup also offered strong performance, with turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, and either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, depending on version. Even base models were well equipped, with features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats, and BMW’s iDrive system.
The 2018 BMW 4 Series is appealing because it blends upscale features with a sporty character and a generally dependable reputation. Owners praise its quality, performance, luxury features, smooth ride, sporty handling, and useful tech such as the sound system and navigation. The main tradeoff is practicality: the convertible’s boot space is limited, and some taller drivers may find comfort less ideal.
