What should I look for when buying a used Audi A4?

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: Choose the Audi A4 40 TFSI, and you’ll get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating an underwhelming 201 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It uses a seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) to power the standard Quattro Ultra all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, and earns an EPA fuel economy rating of 29 mpg in combined driving. Our A4 45 TFSI test car brought 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque to the party. Otherwise, this model’s drivetrain matches the 40 TFSI, but it comes with a lowered sport suspension. Audi claims the A4 45 TFSI accelerates to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, and the EPA says you should expect to get 27 mpg in combined driving.

Which Audi A4 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Audi A4 offers these trims:

• A4 40 TFSI: The value-focused choice with standard AWD, real wood trim, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power sunroof.
• A4 45 TFSI: The stronger turbo-four adds more power and a lowered sport suspension, making it the better pick if you want the most rewarding drive without stepping up to the S4.
• S4: The performance-tuned model sits above the A4 lineup with a more powerful engine.

What Audi A4 do most buyers choose?

The Audi A4 years with the most listings are 2018, 2017, and 2016.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more listings to compare, which can make it easier to find the right mileage, condition, and price combination. They also often sit in the sweet spot where newer features and broader availability overlap.

What is the Audi A4's resale value?

Most Audi A4 model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples have changed less sharply.

The 2016, 2023, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

• 2022: 9/10
• 2017: 8/10

Under the Audi Pre Sense umbrella, the A4 Prestige includes front and rear collision preparation, a forward-collision warning system, and automatic emergency braking.
