One of the greatest saloon cars of all. Gorgeous exterior, beautiful interior and heaps of space in the rear. V6 engines are a gift from heaven. Unfortunately has no RWD or 4WD option. Electronics may have trouble (even though they're made by Bosch)

Built for smooth and supple, not fast and angry. A gentlemen's bolide...don't know what I'm doing with it. Appearance in and out superb. An anti-BMW. 2.5 V6 not gutsy, but v. quiet and silken, tho a bit thirsty. I love it, and did from first view of a 166 10 years ago. Nearly a year into ownership, and I'm still in love. Constantly amazed by the little nuances. When any door is opened, a courtesy light shines on the ground beneath, making sure you don't muddy your Guccis. And it doesn't just suddenly come on; it gently glows until full brightness is achieved. The video display is perfect, and very sophisticated with what it can do. only wish I'd had the fortune to have the built-in sat-nav and multi-load cd player. As it is, the cassettes, of which I have tons, sound terrific in the system. Few cars make you look forward to a drive...this one does. And I'm not prone to gushing about cars...I was in the business for 40 years, and have driven everything with wheels, and some things without! Oh, yes...not a squeak or rattle to be heard, and the 'sport' setting on the AT gets verything moving rather well, with v.good throttle response. If you can find a good one, grab it while they are cheap to purchase, as soon the world will discover them, and they'll dry up.

The best looking car in its class with the best price/performance ratio (second hand). Handling is great on this car. With 2.4 JTD (150bhp) under the hood the acceleration is relatively good, but what it makes perect is the diesel consumption (avg. just around 6.7 liters/100 km). Appearance is is a very subjective part, but for me this is still the best looking car in its class. This car is very fun and easy to drive, despite its weight and size. On highways the comfort is very high and at the same time it has great handling on contry roads.

Clarkson says if you're a true car enthusiast you must have owned an Alfa Romeo at some point. Buying headlong into his frame I picked up this 3.0 V6 model for next to nothing in excellent, low mileage and fully historied condition. The V6 sounds absolutely fantastic, and is brisk without ever being really fast (primarily becasue it suffers from a 4 speed automatic). I wouldn't recommend the car if you had to rely on it - we all know what Alfas are like in terms of reliability - but as a novelty to take for a spin once in a while it's very rewarding.
