Great engine, very practical and pretty reliible. However do not touch older examples of these they were prone to rust on the floorpan. Mine had to be welded in three places before I finally chucked it. Saw one on ebay that was for sale for parts, the same thing had happened to it.

A great small car package. Quick in standard trim. 2.0 DOHC Twin Spark 16v 150bhp engine provides plently of power across the range. Once over 5000rpm, the full performance is available. Sporty close ratio gearbox. Good ride and excellent handling. Front seats are not the comfiest about, but do provide adaquate support when driving ethusiastically. Room in the back is excellent, this car will comfortably sit 4 large adults. Interior is quite modern for age, but very flimsy and badly put together. Only 2 turns from lock to lock on the steering rack, which makes the Alfa lots of fun to drive. I tuned the engine on my example, by changing the ECU, and air inlet sensors and filters, and exhaust. This transformed the car into a very quick hatch with around 170bhp available at high revs. The car could easily exceed 140mph where the law allows. 98+ octane fuel had to be used, and the expensive performance oil needed to be changed every 5000 miles. Electrics like on most old Italian cars are a nightmare. Regardless of high cost issues with parts and servicing, I would reccommend this car purely from a driver's car point of view.

Damn! A bargain! My Saab had broke down and I needed a car. I saw this Alfa 145 at a local auction. I'm glad I did as well. £300 got me a tax & tested 145 1.7 16v boxer. 68,000 miles on the clock, she drives like nothing I've ever owned. Steering is like go cart sharp, suspension is firm, and the sound from the boxer 4 cylinder is glorious. I'm avraging about 35-40 mpg, which is a damn sight better than the Saab I had before, but I am in a smaller car! The only down side I have with this car, is the engine speed. At 70mph, the engine is nearly doing 3500 rpm. I'm used to 70 at about 2500-2700 rpm. It might not sound like a lot, but put a little more speed down, and the revs get high. 4000 rpm at 75mph. The gearing is a tad short, but acceleration is a blast..

My 145 had 1.4 written in the back, but I think those guys from Alfa Romeo exchange my engine to a 1.7QV or something... It was so fast that sometimes it was scary enough to press a little the brake pedal, like "wow... hold your horses, kid"!... For me, the worse thing of the car is that you can't drive the car slowly with some pleasure :( The consumption is around 8-9 liter each 100km and the mechanical parts are not very expensive. The handling is wonderful, with precise steering. However, the brakes use the ABS too much often... It's beautiful outside and inside! Alfa's designers toke care of all minor details to produce a car that makes your eyes smile :) The overall built quality is very good too, although some finishing details could be better. Ergonomically, it has at least 2 things I point: the radio is all down in the bottom and the seats are made only to people with long legs :(
