What people are saying:

4.2

AMC cars are loved for their distinctive styling and powerful performance. Owners appreciate the unique character, strong engines, and solid handling of models like the Javelin and Eagle. However, some drivers face issues with maintenance, rust, and limited power in certain models. While AMC vehicles are recognized for their classic appeal, some aspects like gas mileage and build quality can be concerns. Overall, they provide a fun driving experience and nostalgic value.

This car is in magnificant condition. It has the 258 I6 Crysler in it with a 3 speed B&M slap shifter. Exterior is perfect but the interor needs a little TLC. I love this car and will never get rid of it

Acceleration to 60 mph is about 19 seconds. The car is slow because it only has the power it needs (90 hp)it is appropriate. Braking is adequate but you had better be paying attention to what is far ahead of you. These cars need to be driven thoughtfully. No antilock braking here! Handles like a dream, nimle turning radius. The car is quiet at speed. No squeeks or rattles. You can easily speak to passengers with the windows down and the vent windows open... its erie. Styling is great, both inside and out. People love this little car, always gets smiles. Change the oil every 3 thousand miles, no oil filter on the car. Adjust the valves every 10 thousand miles. Grease the joints with each oil change. The car reliably gets 22 mpg. If driven carefully with the 3 speed manual and using the auto overdrive, the car is capable of far better. Mobile gas milage fuel champion in 1958, they got more than 36 mpg but they did not exceed 40 miles per hour. The heater is exceptional, no cold toes here. The car is fun, fun fun!!!

Reviewed a 1969 AMC AMX on Feb 24, 2010

Great acceleration, decent brakes, decent handling for its day. The color, Castilian Grey Metallic, was introduced in 1969, was great, but the paint code was wrong and caused lots of problems getting paint work done. The AC was inadequate & the windows rattled from day one. I installed the Trendsetter Sidewinder side pipes, which really looked good on the car. Also installed a Hurst shifter, as the stock shifter was not so hot. I read recently that they were equipped with Hurst shifters from the factory - not true. 390 V8, front disks, all the Go Pack options ordered separately because I didn't want stripes. Lots of room in the car - I cold pack my entire set of double bass Ludwig drums in the car.

It is the first cross over, first car to have full time 4x4, it is 25 years old so obviously it is built solid, got a 4.2 straight six with great torque. Car almost saved AMC from chryslers death grip.
