Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 a good car?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 earns a 6.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

It’s built for you if driver engagement matters more than everyday practicality, and the overview makes that priority clear. The GR86 is described as one of the finest and most affordable choices for shoppers who want a fun-to-drive car, with handling that shines especially at the limit and a modest powertrain tuned for enjoyment rather than big numbers.

The trade-offs are just as clear: tight cargo and passenger space, plus a ride that can get hard. Even so, if you want a car that puts fun first, the GR86’s market presence is still healthy, with 32.6% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 reliable?

The GR86 is presented as a simple, driver-focused sports car rather than a complicated one, which generally supports easier ownership. Its performance notes emphasize a standard Torsen limited-slip rear differential, a quick-revving engine, and a manual transmission with short shifts and natural clutch feel, all of which point to a straightforward mechanical setup.

Toyota also includes a year of Service Connect, which provides vehicle health reports and maintenance updates, along with Safety Connect and Remote Connect. That said, the car’s firm ride, limited practicality, and enthusiast-oriented setup mean long-term ownership is best for buyers who are comfortable with a sports-car compromise.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven hard or modified. Focus on ride quality, tire condition, brake wear, and signs that the car has seen track use or aggressive driving.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim is the most basic version, with cloth upholstery, standard all-season tires, and fewer interior touches than the higher trims. The Premium and Yuzu Edition add synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels on Premium, and more upscale or distinctive appearance details.
• Powertrain: The GR86 uses a 2.4-liter flat-four with 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual is the enthusiast choice, and the available tire setups change the car’s grip level and character.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu Edition get blind-spot monitors.
• Infotainment: You get an eight-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. Toyota also includes connected services such as Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect for one year.
• Fuel efficiency: Automatic models are rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. With the manual, the GR86 is rated at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota GR86 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Premium, and Yuzu Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GR86 experience with the least expensive setup. It’s the trim to consider if you want the car’s core handling and manual-transmission fun without paying for extra appearance or comfort upgrades.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the more desirable summer-performance tires, upgraded upholstery, black wheels, and the eight-speaker audio system. If you want the most complete version of the GR86 without jumping to the special edition, this is the one to target.
• Yuzu Edition: This is the most distinctive trim, with Yuzu yellow paint, matte-black wheels, yellow interior stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, Brembo brakes, and Sachs dampers. It’s the pick if you want the most exclusive and performance-focused factory setup.

The safety package is limited compared with many modern cars, and the Premium and Yuzu Edition are the trims that add blind-spot monitors.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have some room to shop carefully rather than rush.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 227 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 83.3% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 safe?

The GR86 does not have a complete crash-test record, and Toyota notes that small-volume sports cars often do not get fully tested. In IIHS testing, it gets only a Good rating for its headlights and for its front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention systems.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, while the Premium and Yuzu Edition add blind-spot monitors.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It keeps the GR86 formula focused on driver engagement, with fantastic handling and a quick-revving engine.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It’s an affordable sports coupe with cheap thrills, good looks, and a manual-transmission option.

The bottom line: If you want the sharpest current version of the GR86 formula and you value driving fun above all else, the 2026 is the better target. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2025 remains a smart alternative because it delivers the same basic enthusiast appeal with a similar mission and likely lower asking prices.
