Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 a good car?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 earns a 6.2/10 expert rating, and the standout strength is Performance at 9/10. It’s built around driver engagement, with fantastic handling, especially at the limit, and a quick-revving engine that makes modest power feel entertaining. That focus fits you best if you want a sports car that prioritizes steering feel, balance, and fun over everyday practicality. The trade-offs are clear: cargo and passenger space are tight, and the ride can get hard. Good and great deals account for 26.0% of listings, which gives you a decent amount of market choice.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 reliable?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is presented as a simple, driver-focused sports car, and that usually means fewer complications than a more heavily equipped performance car. Its quick-revving engine and rear-wheel-drive layout are part of the appeal, and the available automatic and manual transmissions give you straightforward mechanical choices. Toyota also includes connected services such as vehicle health reports and maintenance updates for the first year, which can help you stay ahead of routine upkeep. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a hard-driven example may have seen more wear than its mileage suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, because a sports car like this may have been driven hard or modified. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension condition, brake wear, tire condition, and signs of track use. You should also pay close attention to ride quality and cabin noise on the test drive, since those traits can reveal whether the car has been used gently.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim uses cloth upholstery and standard all-season tires, while the Premium trim adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and summer-performance tires. The Yuzu Edition adds matte-black wheels, yellow interior accent stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint.
• Powertrain: The 2.4-liter flat-four makes 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and you can pair it with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual is the enthusiast choice, while the automatic is the better pick for fuel economy.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu trims add blind-spot monitors.
• Infotainment: You get an eight-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Toyota also includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and Premium and Yuzu models get an eight-speaker audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Automatic models are rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. With the manual, the GR86 is rated at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota GR86 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Premium, and Yuzu Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GR86 formula with the standard all-season tires and cloth upholstery. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and plan to keep the car simple.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, summer-performance tires, and blind-spot monitors. It’s the trim to choose if you want the strongest mix of driving feel and everyday appeal.
• Yuzu Edition: This is the most distinctive version, with matte-black wheels, yellow interior stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint. It suits you if you want the most visual personality and the extra performance hardware that comes with it.

The Premium and Yuzu trims also get blind-spot monitors, which is a useful safety upgrade over the Core.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have enough inventory to shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 219 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 84.5% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 safe?

The GR86 gets only a Good rating for its headlights and for its front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention systems in IIHS testing, and it has an incomplete crash-test record. It hasn’t been subjected to the IIHS’ other tests, so it can’t earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from that organization. It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Its standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu trims add blind-spot monitors. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to trim choice because the Core leaves out some useful driver-assistance features.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It keeps the GR86 formula focused on driver engagement, with fantastic handling and a quick-revving engine.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It adds a limited-production Hakone Edition and a broader everyday-use appeal.

The bottom line: Choose the 2026 if you want the current GR86 experience and are shopping a market with decent deal availability. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2025 is worth a look because it brings similar enthusiast appeal and may offer a different mix of trims and pricing.
