Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 a good car?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 earns a 6.2/10 expert rating, and it’s aimed squarely at you if driving enjoyment matters more than everyday practicality. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

The overview and expert testing both point to the same core appeal: fantastic handling, especially at the limit, a quick-revving engine, and an engaging manual transmission. That makes it a strong fit if you want a small sports car that prioritizes steering feel, balance, and fun over comfort or utility.

The trade-offs are just as clear. The GR86 has tight cargo and passenger space, modest power, and a ride that can get hard, so it asks you to give up some daily livability in exchange for driver engagement.

With 25.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 reliable?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is presented as a focused sports car with a basic level of standard equipment, and its expert testing emphasizes that it’s built around driving enjoyment rather than broad everyday versatility. The overview and expert notes also suggest a straightforward formula: modest power, rear-wheel-drive fun, and a manual transmission that feels natural and engaging.

Its performance content points to a simple, enthusiast-friendly setup, including a standard Torsen limited-slip rear differential and a powertrain tuned to make the most of the engine’s rev range. The cost-effectiveness content also notes that Toyota includes a year of Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect, with maintenance updates available through Service Connect.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a car this focused can be less forgiving if you want low-stress commuting, so condition and maintenance history matter more than usual.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, because a sports car like this may have been driven hard or modified. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the suspension, brakes, tires, and cabin wear, and pay close attention to whether the car’s condition matches its mileage and use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim uses cloth upholstery and standard all-season tires, while the Premium trim adds synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and summer-performance tires. The Yuzu Edition adds its own appearance and performance touches, including matte-black wheels, yellow accent stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.4-liter flat-four with 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The manual is the enthusiast choice, while the automatic is the better pick for fuel economy.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu get blind-spot monitors.
• Infotainment: The GR86 has a standard eight-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and Toyota provides connected services for one year.
• Fuel efficiency: Automatic models are rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. Manual models are rated at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota GR86 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota GR86 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Premium, and Yuzu Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GR86 formula with the standard all-season tires and cloth upholstery. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and plan to keep the car simple.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the summer-performance tires, synthetic suede and leather upholstery, black wheels, and the eight-speaker audio system. It’s the trim that best matches the car’s enthusiast character.
• Yuzu Edition: This is the most distinctive version, with matte-black wheels, yellow interior stitching, black interior trim, a commemorative plaque, and Yuzu yellow paint. It’s the pick if you want the most visual flair and the extra performance hardware that comes with it.

The Premium and Yuzu trims also get blind-spot monitors, which is a useful safety-package upgrade over the Core.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Toyota GR86?

The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 25.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 217 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 82.9% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Toyota GR86 safe?

The GR86 gets only a Good rating for its headlights and for its front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention systems in IIHS testing, and it hasn’t been subjected to the organization’s other tests.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic models add rear parking sensors, and the Premium and Yuzu trims add blind-spot monitors.

Because the crash-test record is incomplete, you should treat safety as a secondary strength rather than a headline advantage.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 25.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It keeps the GR86 formula focused on handling, a rev-happy engine, and driver engagement.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It offers affordable sports-car fun with broad appeal and a manual-transmission option.

The bottom line: If you want the latest version of Toyota’s lightweight sports coupe, the 2026 is the one to target. If you’re shopping mainly on price and want a similar enthusiast-first experience, the 2025 is worth a look.
