New & Used 2026 Toyota 4Runner for Sale nearThe Dalles, OR

Is the 2026 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 6.7/10 expert rating point to a vehicle that strongly fits its mission. The standout strength is Technology at 8/10.

The 2026 Toyota 4Runner is built around adventure, and that shows up in the way it prioritizes off-road ability and family-hauling usefulness over crossover polish. It stands out as one of the better off-roaders on the market, and it offers an available hybrid powertrain for buyers who want extra capability without giving up the rugged formula.

The trade-offs are clear: the ride is firm and jiggly, and the cabin gives up passenger comfort and interior space to achieve its trail-ready character. Even with the hybrid setup, fuel economy still trails what you’d expect from a typical crossover.

For shoppers who want a rugged SUV with a clear identity, that compromise can make sense. The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 32.5% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2026 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2026 Toyota 4Runner is designed around durability-minded adventure use, and its off-road-focused setup suggests a vehicle built to handle demanding conditions rather than chase luxury-car refinement.

Its powertrain lineup includes a turbocharged four-cylinder and an available hybrid system, and the hybrid’s torque-rich character is useful when you’re climbing, crawling, or pulling out of rough terrain. The ownership picture is also helped by Toyota’s connected-service coverage, including maintenance updates and vehicle health reports.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is that the same rugged hardware that makes it appealing can also mean a harder life if the previous owner used it heavily off pavement.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota 4Runner?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for trail driving or towing. Focus on wear items that can reveal hard use, and pay close attention to the ride quality, steering feel, and interior condition.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from SR5 to TRD Pro, with off-road-focused models getting more capability hardware and the base trim missing some of the larger-screen and premium equipment upgrades.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, or the i-Force Max hybrid with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft.
• Safety package: Every 4Runner gets Safety Sense 3.0, which includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, road-sign recognition, and high-beam assist. Blind-spot monitors, front and rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic-jam assist are also standard.
• Infotainment: The base setup includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get a 12.3-inch cluster and, on Premium trims or higher, a 14-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is rated at 23 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined, while non-hybrid versions are rated as high as 22 mpg combined for RWD and 21 mpg combined for 4WD.

Which 2026 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 9 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, but it’s the most basic way into the lineup and misses some of the larger-screen and premium equipment found higher up.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a step up from the base model without jumping into the more specialized off-road trims.
• TRD Sport Premium: This is the better-value version of the Sport if you want more comfort and tech without going all the way to the pricier adventure models.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value trim for buyers who want the 4Runner’s core mission, because it adds serious off-road hardware and is the most affordable way into the most efficient 4Runner.
• TRD Off-Road Premium: Pick this if you want the off-road capability of the TRD Off-Road plus the added convenience of the Multi-Terrain Monitor.
• Limited: This is the more street-friendly choice, with a lower ride height and full-time 4WD that make it easier to live with on pavement.
• Platinum: This is the upscale choice in the lineup, with the hybrid powertrain standard and a more premium equipment set.
• Trailhunter: This is for buyers who want a heavily equipped adventure model with extra off-road hardware and overlanding-style gear.
• TRD Pro: This is the most extreme factory off-road version, with the most aggressive hardware and the highest price.

Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 suite is standard across the lineup, and blind-spot monitoring plus front and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too.

Is the 2026 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2026 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings in the frontal crash and rollover evaluations from NHTSA, and it gets mixed results from IIHS.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, road-sign recognition, and high-beam assist. Blind-spot monitors, front and rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic-jam assist are also standard.

The caveat is that crash-test performance is uneven: IIHS gave it a Marginal result in the moderate front overlap test, and headlight performance varies by trim level.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It remains one of the better off-roaders on the market while offering an available hybrid powertrain.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It brings a redesigned 4Runner with more capability, power, comfort, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the current 4Runner’s rugged identity and can live with its comfort and efficiency compromises, the 2026 is the straightforward choice. If you’re more price-sensitive and want a newer-feeling 4Runner with a strong balance of capability and everyday usability, the 2025 is worth a look.
