New & Used 2026 Toyota 4Runner for Sale nearMount Ayr, IA

Is the 2026 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2026 Toyota 4Runner earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 8/10.

The 4Runner is built for adventure, and that shows up in its off-road focus, available hybrid powertrain, and ability to carry more passengers than rivals like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. That makes it a strong fit if you want trail capability without giving up passenger capacity.

The trade-offs are clear: it makes compromises in passenger comfort and interior space, and its ride is firm and jiggly. The hybrid helps, but fuel economy still trails typical crossover SUVs.

For shoppers who want an adventure-oriented SUV and can live with those compromises, it makes sense; for most daily family duty, a crossover would be the more comfortable and affordable choice. Good and great deals account for 35.3% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 4Runner’s rugged, body-on-frame design and adventure-first setup point to a vehicle built for durability-minded buyers, and the expert evaluation also notes that it’s purpose-built for off-road use. Its performance notes describe the powertrain as well matched to the engine, with useful torque for off-roading and a transmission that fits the vehicle’s mission.

The cost-effectiveness notes also mention that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the same off-road hardware and firm tuning that make it capable can also make it less forgiving if you want a comfortable daily driver.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Toyota 4Runner?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re looking at one of the more off-road-focused trims. Pay close attention to ride quality, tire wear, and signs of hard use, since this SUV is designed to be taken off pavement.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim is the most stripped-down version, with cloth upholstery and the smaller standard screens, while higher trims add synthetic leather or leather, larger displays, and more upscale equipment. The off-road-focused trims also add hardware such as black wheel flares, unique bumpers for better approach angles, and heritage-inspired front-end details.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, or the i-Force Max hybrid with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. The hybrid adds stronger torque for off-road use and better efficiency than the non-hybrid setup.
• Safety package: Every 4Runner gets Safety Sense 3.0, which includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, road-sign recognition, and high-beam assist. Blind-spot monitors, front and rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic-jam assist are also standard.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and wireless phone charging is included on all but the base model.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid TRD Off-Road is rated at 23 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined. A non-hybrid RWD model gets 22 mpg combined, while other non-hybrid 4WD versions are rated at 21 mpg combined.

Which 2026 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2026 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 9 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro.

• TRD Sport Premium: This is the better pick if you want the Sport trim’s positioning with more comfort and tech content.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value trim for buyers who want serious capability, since it’s the most affordable way into the most efficient 4Runner hybrid setup.
• TRD Off-Road Premium: Pick this if you want the off-road hardware plus the added Multi-Terrain Monitor for better trail visibility.
• Limited: This is the more street-friendly choice, with a full-time 4WD system and a lower ride height that make it easier to live with on pavement.
• Platinum: Choose this if you want the upscale trim with the hybrid powertrain standard and the more road-oriented full-time 4WD setup.
• Trailhunter: This is for buyers who want the most adventure-ready factory setup, with extra ground clearance, disconnecting sway bars, and trail-focused hardware.
• TRD Pro: This is the top off-road choice, with the most aggressive hardware and the highest starting price.

Is the 2026 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2026 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. It also received a Marginal score in the IIHS moderate front overlap crash test, with headlights that rate Poor to Acceptable to Good depending on trim level, and an incomplete rating in the small front overlap test because it has only been tested on one side.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota equips every 4Runner with Safety Sense 3.0, which includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, road-sign recognition, and high-beam assist. Blind-spot monitors, front and rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic-jam assist are also standard.

The mixed crash-test results are the main caveat here, so you should pay attention to trim-specific headlight performance and remember that this is still a rugged SUV first.

Should I buy a 2026 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It emphasizes adventure while carrying more passengers than key rivals.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It brought more capability, power, comfort, and technology after a long redesign wait.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-market availability, owner satisfaction, and adventure-ready capability, the 2026 is the better target. If you’re more price-sensitive and want a recent redesign with similar core appeal, the 2025 is worth a look.
