Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns an 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

The 2026 E-Class is aimed at you if you want a luxury midsize car that goes beyond the usual sedan formula, especially because it still offers a wagon body style. The lineup also adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner for saved driver profiles, which gives the cabin a more personal, tech-forward feel. If you want something uncommon and practical, the wagon version is the standout choice.

The trade-offs are real, though. The expert notes call out squealing, grabby brakes and a cramped back seat, and advanced safety features are not standard. Even so, the E-Class wagon’s mix of utility, sophistication, and uncommon body style makes it appealing if you value character and versatility over pure mainstream practicality.

With 32.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market offers a moderate amount of value-oriented inventory.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is presented as a polished, well-engineered luxury car, with the expert notes emphasizing its refined behavior and sophisticated systems. The performance write-up also points to strong real-world efficiency for the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, including electric-only driving for short trips and a gasoline engine for longer drives.

The dependability language in the test-drive notes is encouraging in the sense that the powertrain and driver-assistance systems are described as working smoothly and naturally. The plug-in hybrid setup is also framed as efficient and practical for daily use, which is a good sign for ownership ease if you keep up with charging and routine maintenance.

If you buy used, your long-term risk is less about outright capability and more about the complexity that comes with a high-tech luxury performance wagon.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with this much technology and performance hardware. Focus on the condition of the brakes, the infotainment screens, and any optional driver-assistance equipment, since the expert notes point to both high equipment levels and some usability quirks.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The E 450 All-Terrain is the less-expensive wagon, while the AMG E 53 Hybrid is the performance upgrade. The AMG model adds a more aggressive road-focused character, and the test car’s Pinnacle trim, AMG Dynamic Plus, MBUX Superscreen, Driver Assistance, and Multicontour Seating packages pushed the price much higher.
• Powertrain: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six paired with a 120-kilowatt electric motor and a 21.2-kilowatt-hour battery. It delivers 577 hp and 553 lb-ft, with 604 hp available with Race Start active, plus an EPA-rated 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and Pre-Safe collision preparation for rear and side impacts. Advanced safety features are not standard.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with augmented reality navigation and MBUX voice control. The optional Superscreen adds a 12.3-inch passenger display.
• Fuel efficiency: The AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon is rated at 41 miles of electric range and 22 mpg combined in hybrid mode. In testing, it averaged 47.4 mpg over the first 250 miles when frequently recharged, with 52% of miles driven on electricity.

Which 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E 350 Sedan, E 450 Sedan, E 450 All-Terrain Wagon, AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• E 350 Sedan: This is the entry point if you want the E-Class experience without stepping into the pricier performance or wagon models. It makes the most sense if you care more about getting into the lineup than about maximum equipment or speed.
• E 450 Sedan: This is the better all-around sedan choice if you want more power and a more upscale feel than the E 350. It should be the trim to target if you want the strongest balance of everyday luxury and performance.
• E 450 All-Terrain Wagon: Choose this if you want the wagon body style with a more rugged look and light off-road capability. It is the less-expensive wagon and is the practical pick if you want utility without going all the way to AMG pricing.
• AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan: This is the performance-focused choice, with the strongest powertrain and the most dramatic character. It suits you if you want the quickest, most exciting E-Class sedan and are willing to pay for the extra performance hardware.

The safety package note is simple: advanced safety features are not standard, so the Driver Assistance Package is worth a close look if you want the fullest set of driver aids.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, especially if you are shopping carefully and comparing equipment levels.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 637 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 96.5% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class does not have published NHTSA or IIHS crash-test ratings yet.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, an exit warning system, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, a semi-autonomous self-parking system, Pre-Safe forward-collision preparation, Pre-Safe Sound, and SOS emergency call service. The optional Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, active intersection assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assist, active lane-keep assist, active steering assist, automatic lane change capability, evasive steering assist, congestion emergency braking, and rear- and side-impact Pre-Safe preparation.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should look closely at whether a used example has the Driver Assistance Package.

Should I buy a 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 adds a standard biometric fingerprint scanner and debuts the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon, giving you a more distinctive and tech-forward lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the newest E-Class with the wagon body style, the fingerprint scanner, and the AMG E 53 Hybrid wagon’s blend of efficiency and performance, the 2026 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be the smarter move, especially if you can find similar equipment for less.
