Is the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 6.8/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Jeep’s refresh gives you a more modern take on a long-running midsize SUV, with updated styling, a bigger touchscreen inside, and a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that adds fresh energy to the lineup. It still fits the bill if you want a stylish SUV with strong towing and off-road ability, and the lineup is clearer than before.

The trade-offs are familiar: fuel economy is middling, and the model is called poor value for money, especially once you move up the trim ladder. For shoppers who care most about capability and presence, it still makes sense, but the price can make you think twice. Good and great deals account for 35.8% of listings.

Is the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee is presented as a familiar, proven midsize SUV with a refreshed powertrain lineup and the same core mission you’d expect from the nameplate. The new turbocharged four-cylinder is described as impressive, and Jeep’s long-running setup still centers on straightforward gasoline power rather than a more complex hybrid system.

Jeep also says the new engine is built with advanced features such as a variable-geometry turbo and pre-chamber ignition, which help it deliver strong performance. On the ownership side, Jeep’s three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty give you standard coverage for the class.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that higher-mileage examples may be more expensive to live with if you want the better-equipped trims or the newer turbo engine.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping for a higher-trim example with more equipment. Focus on condition, feature operation, and whether the vehicle has the equipment you want, since the lineup changes meaningfully by trim.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Laredo and Laredo X have cloth upholstery and 18-inch wheels, while the Laredo Altitude adds a Black Appearance Package with black 18-inch wheels. Higher trims bring leatherette or genuine leather, larger wheels, and more upscale cabin materials.
• Powertrain: The Laredo and Laredo X keep the 3.6-liter V6, while other trims get the Hurricane 4 Turbo engine. Both engines use an eight-speed automatic, and rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive are the drivetrain choices.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Active Drive Assist is available starting on the Laredo Altitude, so lower trims miss that hands-free highway system.
• Infotainment: The Laredo and Laredo X use a 10.2-inch touchscreen, while a 12.3-inch screen is available on Laredo Altitude and higher trims. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system runs Uconnect 5.
• Fuel efficiency: Jeep expects the Hurricane four-cylinder to return up to 27 mpg combined, compared with 22 mpg combined for the V6.

Which 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 7 trim levels: Laredo, Laredo X, Laredo Altitude, Limited, Limited Reserve, Limited Altitude, and Summit.

Here's the short version:

• Laredo: This is the entry point if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability at the lowest price, but it stays basic with cloth upholstery, the smaller 10.2-inch touchscreen, and fewer upscale touches than the higher trims.
• Laredo X: This is the same basic starting point as the Laredo, so it makes sense if you find one with the equipment and price you want, but it doesn’t materially change the formula.
• Laredo Altitude: This is the first trim that feels meaningfully upgraded, with the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, blacked-out styling, and access to Active Drive Assist. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more modern cabin without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Limited: This is the trim to target if you want a more balanced mix of comfort and equipment, including leatherette upholstery and available 20-inch wheels. It also opens the door to more tech and convenience features.
• Limited Reserve: This is the value play near the top of the lineup, with genuine leather upholstery and a more premium feel. Jeep positions it as a strong buy because it delivers a lot of equipment for less than the outgoing equivalent.
• Limited Altitude: This trim blends the Limited’s equipment with blackout styling and larger wheels, so it suits you if appearance matters as much as content.
• Summit: This is the most luxurious version, with 21-inch wheels, a black roof, genuine leather, the 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, and the most advanced available hardware. It’s the one to buy if you want the most upscale Grand Cherokee experience.

Active Drive Assist starts on the Laredo Altitude trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find decent opportunities.

• Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,625 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 94.5% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have current crash-test ratings listed here, but Jeep says the similar 2025 model earned a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five stars in front and side crash tests and four stars in rollover testing. The IIHS also gave the 2025 model a Top Safety Pick designation, with Good scores in the small overlap front and updated side tests and a Marginal score for seat belt reminders.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Jeep makes a strong set of driver-assistance features standard, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Active Drive Assist is available starting on the Laredo Altitude trim, so you need to move up from the base models if you want that hands-free highway system.

Should I buy a 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 update brings a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, updated styling, a bigger touchscreen, and a clearer trim structure.

The bottom line: If you want the freshest version of the Grand Cherokee with the new turbo-four and updated cabin tech, the 2026 model is the one to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may still make sense, especially if you can find the equipment you want at a lower asking price.

How does the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee compare to the 2026 Ford Explorer?

Expert Pros & Cons (per CarGurus review team)

2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee:

• Pros: Stylish design, Small-but-mighty Hurricane 4 Turbo engine, It’s a towing and off-road champ.
• Cons: Middling fuel economy, Poor value for money.

2026 Ford Explorer:

• Pros: Comfortable, Optional twin-turbo V6, Impressive safety ratings.
• Cons: Bland styling, Nondescript interior, Gets expensive with options.

Our experts score the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6.8/10 and the 2026 Ford Explorer 7.5/10. The Grand Cherokee leans harder into style, towing, and off-road ability, while the Explorer looks like the more comfortable and better-rated all-around pick. If you care most about rugged capability and a more distinctive design, the Jeep has the edge; if you want the stronger overall expert score and a more conventional family-SUV approach, the Ford is the safer bet.
