Is the 2026 Honda Civic a good car?

The 2026 Honda Civic earns a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

You’re getting a compact car that blends broad appeal with a more polished feel than many rivals. Honda offers it as a sedan or hatchback, and the lineup also includes sporty Si and performance-tuned Type R variants. That flexibility helps explain why the Civic remains one of the top-selling compact cars in America.

The trade-offs are clear: you pay a premium for it, it can be noisy at speed, and its technology is described as outdated. Even so, the Civic still comes across as satisfying to drive, and that holds true even with the base engine.

With 30.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Honda Civic reliable?

Honda ranks high in reliability, and the Civic is described as a dependable model. It’s also framed as the kind of car you buy, drive for a long time, spend very little to keep running, and have it just work for years and years.

The performance notes reinforce that impression: the Civic’s base powertrain is straightforward, the CVT is generally unobtrusive, and the car’s brakes, steering, and suspension are tuned for consistent everyday use. Honda also positions the Civic as fuel-efficient, especially in hybrid form.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that a higher purchase price can make condition and maintenance history matter more than usual.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Honda Civic?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, then prioritize a close inspection of the body, cabin, tires, and electronics. Because the Civic can be noisy at speed and its tech is a weak point, it’s smart to test those areas carefully on your drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Civic lineup is extensive, with sedans and hatchbacks, gas-only and hybrid powertrains, and performance variants such as the Si and Type R. The Civic Sport is one step up from the base Civic LX trim level, and the base car’s infotainment setup is especially plain.
• Powertrain: The Civic LX and Civic Sport use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The hybrids use Honda’s Two Motor Hybrid powertrain and are described as offering remarkable power and impressive efficiency.
• Safety package: Every Civic gets Honda Sensing, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, and Traffic Jam Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not available on the Civic LX, but they are on the Civic Sport.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require a cable connection. Higher trims such as the Civic Si and Sport Touring Hybrid get larger 10.2-inch instrumentation and 9-inch infotainment displays, plus Google built-in, Alexa built-in, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless smartphone charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The Civic returns 31 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg combined. On a test loop, it returned 31.9 mpg.

Which 2026 Honda Civic trim should I buy?

The 2026 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Sport, Sport Hybrid, Sport Touring Hybrid, and Si.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Civic’s core strengths without the extra equipment found on higher trims. It’s the trim to consider if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the most basic tech.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful equipment over the LX, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and an eight-speaker audio system. It also keeps the Civic’s appealing driving character intact.
• Sport Hybrid: This is the trim to choose if you want the hybrid powertrain and its efficiency advantage. The content points to the hybrid setup as the strongest powertrain choice if you can afford it.
• Sport Touring Hybrid: This is the most feature-rich mainstream trim, with larger displays, Google built-in, Alexa built-in, wireless smartphone charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. It’s the pick if you want the most technology and comfort.
• Si: This is the enthusiast choice, with a manual transmission and a racier character than the standard sedan models. It suits you if driving engagement matters more than everyday value.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not available on the Civic LX.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Honda Civic?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and focus on condition as much as price.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,858 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 88.3% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 Honda Civic safe?

The 2026 Civic sedan earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, including four-star frontal impact, five-star side impact, and five-star rollover resistance ratings.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is standard, and it includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, and Traffic Jam Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not available on the Civic LX, but they are included on the Civic Sport.

One caveat is that the lane-centering assist can feel intrusive without adaptive cruise control, and the adaptive cruise control itself can brake too hard and too long in heavier traffic.

Should I buy a 2026 Honda Civic or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It carries over unchanged after a mild update for the 2025 model year.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It adds subtle but meaningful updates and expands the powertrain lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version of this generation and you’re comfortable paying for a Civic’s strengths, the 2026 is the cleaner choice. If you’re shopping more aggressively on price, the 2025 is worth a look because it delivers the same basic appeal with a slightly older model-year value proposition.
