Is the 2026 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2026 BMW X5 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

The X5’s appeal is that it blends style, quality, comfort, tech, and performance in a way few rivals can match. It also gives you a wide spread of choices, from efficiency-focused versions to performance models, so you can tailor the SUV to how you drive.

The trade-offs are clear: it is expensive, and the price rises quickly with upgrades. You also need to be comfortable with limited standard equipment if you want the richer feature set.

Good and great deals account for 35.5% of listings, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The X5 is described as a well-established midsize luxury SUV, and BMW backs it with three years or 36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance. Its powertrain lineup also includes efficient and performance-oriented choices, which gives you flexibility depending on how you plan to use it.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is cost: options can push the price up quickly, and the SUV’s premium positioning means repairs and upkeep can be expensive if you buy a heavily equipped example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW X5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

Even with a strong clean-inventory rate, you should still run a history report and verify that the specific vehicle you want has no hidden damage or title issues. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a luxury SUV like this, where option content and condition can vary a lot from one listing to the next. Focus on wear items, electronics, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i and AWD xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i, and X5 M Competition models. The base setup is light on standard equipment, so check carefully for missing comfort and convenience features before you buy.
• Powertrain: BMW offers six-cylinder and eight-cylinder powertrains. The xDrive50e plug-in hybrid adds 38 miles of electric range, while the M60i uses a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 532 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, automatic emergency stop, evasive steering assist, and Highway Assistant are part of the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package.
• Infotainment: The BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel with a 14.9-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with iDrive 8.5, cloud-based navigation, and connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The sDrive40i and xDrive40i are rated at 25 mpg combined, the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid offers 38 miles of electric range, and the M60i is rated at 19 mpg.

Which 2026 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i, and X5 M Competition.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive40i: This is the least expensive entry point, and it makes sense if you want the X5’s core luxury feel without paying for AWD or performance extras. It is the value starting point, but you should expect to add options if you want a fuller feature set.
• xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds AWD while staying closer to the lower end of the lineup. If you want the most balanced mix of price, traction, and everyday usability, this is the trim to focus on.
• xDrive50e: Choose this if efficiency matters most. It adds plug-in hybrid capability and 38 miles of electric range, making it the smart pick for buyers who can charge regularly and want to reduce fuel use.
• M60i: This is the performance-oriented choice, with a twin-turbo V8 and a much more aggressive character. It suits you if you want strong acceleration and are willing to accept higher running costs.
• X5 M Competition: This is the top performance model for buyers who want the most extreme version of the X5. It is the one to consider if outright performance matters more than value.

BMW notes that many advanced safety features are bundled into the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,464 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.56% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 96.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $70,880, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $70,963 sits slightly below last year's $75,139.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy near the current average and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should be better positioned than someone who pays near the top of the range. The X5’s broad appeal and premium positioning help support demand, especially for well-equipped examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2026 BMW X5 safe?

The 2026 BMW X5 earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ rating and a four-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with four-star ratings for the driver and front passenger in a frontal impact collision.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors. BMW’s optional Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, automatic emergency stop, evasive steering assist, and Highway Assistant with hands-free driving up to 85 mph.

One caveat is that many advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you need to verify whether a used example has the optional package you want.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Five versions are available, giving you a broad spread from efficiency to performance.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $58,266, the 2025 costs less than the current year's $70,963 average.
• It is already well established after a substantial update for the 2024 model year.

The bottom line: If you want the broadest current selection and are comfortable shopping a pricier luxury SUV, the 2026 is the better path. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2025 is the smarter alternative because it delivers the X5 formula at a much lower average price.
