Is the 2026 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2026 BMW X5 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

The X5 stands out as a midsize luxury SUV that blends style, quality, comfort, tech, and performance in a way few rivals can match. It also gives you a wide spread of choices, from efficiency-focused versions to performance-oriented models.

The main trade-offs are its poor ride quality and the way costs can climb quickly once you start adding options. Even so, the market still shows 36.2% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The X5’s appeal is reinforced by its strong overall balance of comfort, technology, and performance, and BMW backs it with three years or 36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance. Its performance credentials are also broad, with multiple powertrain choices that let you prioritize efficiency or power.

The maintenance coverage helps soften ownership costs early on, but the X5’s high purchase price and option-heavy structure still make it a vehicle where long-term value depends on how carefully you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW X5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re looking at a higher-trim or heavily optioned example. Focus on condition, equipment verification, and whether the vehicle’s features match the asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, and the least expensive models can still be optioned with many desirable features. Base versions are the ones most likely to feel light on standard equipment.
• Powertrain: BMW offers a range of six-cylinder and eight-cylinder powertrains, including more fuel-efficient choices and a plug-in hybrid with 38 miles of electric range.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, automatic emergency stop, evasive steering assist, and Highway Assistant are part of an optional package.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, and connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The more efficient versions are rated at 25 mpg combined, and the plug-in hybrid adds 38 miles of electric range.

Which 2026 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i, X5 M Competition.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive40i: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable building up features with options. It makes the most sense if you want the X5 experience without paying for all-wheel drive.
• xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive while staying closer to the lower end of the lineup. If you want the broadest mix of everyday usability and price discipline, this is the trim to focus on.
• xDrive50e: Choose this if efficiency matters most. It adds all-wheel drive and 38 miles of electric range, making it the smart pick for buyers who can charge regularly and want to reduce fuel use.
• M60i: This is the performance-focused choice for buyers who want the strongest acceleration and a more aggressive driving character. It suits you best if you care more about power and premium feel than value.
• X5 M Competition: This is the top performance model for shoppers who want the most exclusive, most expensive version of the X5. It makes sense only if you want maximum performance and are comfortable with a steep price climb.

BMW notes that advanced driver-assistance features are bundled in an optional Driving Assistance Professional Package rather than being standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW X5?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,538 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.85% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 96.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $70,614, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $70,634 sits slightly below last year's $74,235.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the vehicle is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. If you buy at the right price now, you may reduce the risk of taking a bigger hit later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2026 BMW X5 safe?

The 2026 BMW X5 earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it a Top Safety Pick+ rating.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors. More advanced features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, automatic emergency stop, evasive steering assist, and Highway Assistant are part of an optional package.

The main caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you’ll want to verify exactly which package a used example has before you buy.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.85% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It offers five versions, including efficiency-focused and performance-focused choices.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $57,075, the 2025 costs less than the current year's $70,634 average.
• It remains an established version with multiple powertrain options and strong handling.

Consider the 2027 if:

• It brings a ground-up redesign with more distinctive styling and a longer wheelbase.
• It adds a major interior tech overhaul and more rear legroom.

The bottom line: If you want the current X5’s blend of luxury, performance, and broad trim choice, the 2026 is the better path. If price matters most, the 2025 is the value play, while the 2027 is the move if you’d rather wait for the redesign and its newer tech.
