Is the 2026 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2026 BMW X5 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

The X5’s appeal is that it blends style, quality, comfort, tech, and performance in a midsize luxury SUV package. It also gives you a wide spread of choices, from efficiency-focused versions to performance-oriented models, so you can tailor it to how you drive.

The main trade-offs are its poor ride quality, limited standard equipment, and the way costs rise quickly once you start adding options.

With 34.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The X5 is presented as an established model rather than a fresh redesign, which usually helps reduce the risk of early-production surprises. BMW also includes three years or 36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, which helps soften some ownership costs early on.

Its powertrain lineup includes efficient and performance-oriented choices, and the plug-in hybrid version adds electric-only driving range for buyers who can charge regularly. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is cost creep from options, repairs, and maintenance once the included coverage ends.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW X5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has higher mileage or a long option list. Focus on condition, because the X5 can be expensive to repair and its equipment mix varies a lot by trim and package.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i and AWD xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i, and X5 M Competition versions. The base setup is more limited, while higher trims add more luxury and performance equipment.
• Powertrain: BMW offers six-cylinder and eight-cylinder powertrains, plus a plug-in hybrid. The xDrive50e is the efficiency play, while the M60i brings a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 532 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, automatic emergency stop, evasive steering assist, and Highway Assistant are part of the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, SiriusXM 360L, and connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The sDrive40i and xDrive40i are rated at 25 mpg combined, the xDrive50e offers 38 miles of electric range, and the M60i is rated at 19 mpg.

Which 2026 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i, X5 M Competition.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive40i: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price and rear-wheel drive, but it still carries the X5’s upscale cabin and strong overall appeal. It makes sense if you want the X5 experience without paying for extra performance hardware.
• xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive while staying in the more affordable part of the lineup. If you want the most balanced everyday X5, this is the trim to start with.
• xDrive50e: This is the smart pick if efficiency matters most, since it adds plug-in hybrid capability and 38 miles of electric range. It’s the trim to consider if you can charge at home and want to reduce fuel use.
• M60i: This is the performance-focused choice, with the V8 powertrain and a more aggressive character. It suits you if you want the strongest acceleration and are willing to accept higher running costs.
• X5 M Competition: This is the most extreme version in the lineup and is aimed at buyers who want the most performance-oriented X5. It makes sense only if you want the top-end model and are comfortable with its price.

BMW notes that many advanced safety features are bundled into the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package rather than standard equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW X5?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,589 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.16% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 96.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $70,714, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $70,762 sits slightly below last year's $74,613.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, the current softness means resale value may depend more heavily on trim, condition, mileage, and option content.

Because the X5 is a premium SUV with broad appeal, well-kept examples should still attract interest. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2026 BMW X5 safe?

The 2026 BMW X5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and four-star ratings in frontal crash for the driver and front passenger, along with an overall four-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes high-beam assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a speed limit assistant, a driver monitoring system, a collision preparation system, post-collision braking, and parking sensors.

If you want adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, automatic emergency stop, evasive steering assist, and Highway Assistant with hands-free driving capability, you need the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package. BMW’s lane-keep and lane-centering systems can also be less effective away from divided highways.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.16% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It offers five versions for 2026, including efficiency-focused and performance-focused choices.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $57,299, the 2025 costs less than the current year's $70,762 average.
• It is an established version of the X5 with multiple powertrain options and a comfortable driving experience.

The bottom line: If you want the newest used X5 with a broad trim spread and softer pricing than a year ago, the 2026 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2025 is the more budget-friendly path and still gives you the core X5 formula.
