New & Used 2026 BMW M5 for Sale nearNew Brunswick, NJ

Is the 2026 BMW M5 a good car?

The 2026 BMW M5 earns a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

It’s a strong fit if you want a high-performance midsize luxury car that still works as a daily driver. BMW’s own positioning and the expert verdict both emphasize the M5’s racetrack-and-autobahn capability without giving up everyday usability, and the plug-in hybrid powertrain adds real-world versatility to that formula.

The trade-offs are clear: the design may be polarizing, and the dashboard and interior are described as awkward and gaudy. Even so, the M5’s breadth of capability makes it compelling if you want speed, comfort, and practicality in one package.

With 36.3% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW M5 reliable?

The 2026 BMW M5 is presented as a technically advanced performance car with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, adaptive chassis hardware, and a broad range of configurable driving settings. That kind of complexity can be a strength when everything is working as intended, especially because BMW’s chassis and powertrain controls are described as well-integrated and natural in use.

The performance hardware is substantial: a twin-turbocharged V8, an electric motor, an eight-speed automatic, xDrive all-wheel drive, active steering, adaptive dampers, and strong brakes. The expert write-up also notes that the car can be driven in Comfort mode as a serene highway cruiser, which suggests it’s engineered for more than just hard driving.

BMW also includes useful ownership-friendly touches, including a plug-in hybrid setup with electric driving capability and a more powerful onboard charger for 2026. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that this is a highly complex, high-output performance hybrid, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW M5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with this much performance hardware and hybrid complexity. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car’s technology and chassis systems operate cleanly and consistently.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The M5’s design and cabin are intentionally dramatic, and the standard setup already includes a glass roof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and well-bolstered Merino leather front seats. The optional Executive Package adds front and rear seat heating plus front-seat ventilation, so base cars may miss some comfort features you might want.
• Powertrain: You’re looking at a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 paired with a plug-in hybrid system, an eight-speed automatic, and M-specific xDrive all-wheel drive. The setup delivers 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, with rear-axle decoupling for RWD-style driving and a torque-vectoring rear differential.
• Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering and Traffic Jam Assistant, while higher-speed hands-free driving is not offered.
• Infotainment: The standard BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, iDrive 8.5, YouTube streaming, AirConsole gaming, a 5G antenna, an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, digital key functionality, and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The sedan is rated at 25 miles of electric range, and hybrid-mode fuel economy is 14 mpg combined. BMW also says electric mode is available up to 87 mph.

Which 2026 BMW M5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW M5 is offered in 2 trim levels: sedan and Touring.

Here’s the short version:

• Sedan: This is the lighter, quicker, and more traditional choice, with the strongest efficiency and the same core performance hardware as the wagon. It’s the better pick if you want the sharpest all-around M5 and don’t need extra cargo flexibility.
• Touring: This is the best-value choice if you want the M5’s performance with more everyday utility. It keeps the same powertrain and chassis tech while adding wagon practicality, and the expert review specifically highlights the appeal of the long-roof body style.

The standard safety package includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering and Traffic Jam Assistant.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering for highway driving and Traffic Jam Assistant for stop-and-go traffic at speeds up to 40 mph.

BMW also gives you control over how intrusive the aids feel: Sport mode reduces most steering and brake interventions, while Track mode turns everything off completely. That flexibility is useful if you plan to drive the car enthusiastically.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW M5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 36.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 adds a more powerful onboard charger and more paint options.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It delivers the same 717-horsepower plug-in hybrid formula with up to 25 miles of electric driving.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version of this generation, the 2026 is the straightforward pick because the updates are modest but useful. If you’re shopping on price, the 2025 is the smarter target since its core performance and versatility are already very close to the 2026.
