Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series a good car?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns an 8/10 expert rating, and the 540i xDrive is presented as a well-rounded luxury sedan that blends comfort, technology, and driving enjoyment. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

That balance shows up in the review’s core takeaways: it is described as fun to drive, comfortable, and impressive in its technology, while also being mature and largely unchanged after the 2024 redesign. The trade-offs are that its styling may be polarizing and cargo space is limited, so you’re getting a sedan that leans more toward refinement and driving satisfaction than maximum practicality.

With 34.0% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have a meaningful share of market opportunities if you’re shopping selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series reliable?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is described as a mature package, entering its third year after a redesign, which usually helps reduce the uncertainty that can come with a brand-new model. The review also calls the 540i xDrive smooth, civilized, quiet, comfortable, and infused with quality, all of which point to a car that should feel solid in day-to-day use.

It also benefits from three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which helps soften early ownership costs. The powertrain is described as relatively fuel efficient for its performance level, and the overall package is presented as refined rather than experimental.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that you’re still buying a complex luxury sedan, so condition, maintenance history, and option-package content matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or a long option list. Focus on overall condition, because the 5 Series can vary a lot depending on whether it was configured for luxury comfort or a firmer, more aggressive driving setup.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 540i test car was equipped with the M Sport package, Extended Shadowline trim, and Iconic Glow grille illumination, while the cabin featured Copper and Grey Merino leather upholstery and a Bowers & Wilkins high-end audio system. Those kinds of upgrades can make the car feel much richer, but they also mean you should check whether the features you want are actually present, since the base setup is more restrained.
• Powertrain: The 540i xDrive uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, making 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission and standard AWD, and the review notes that the setup is smooth, swift, civilized, and relatively fuel efficient.
• Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, which together form an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver assistance, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant, though Highway Assistant was inactive in the test vehicle.
• Infotainment: The BMW Curved Display includes a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, powered by BMW Operating System 8.5. It also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i xDrive is rated at 28 mpg combined, and the test vehicle averaged 26.5 mpg on the review loop.

Which 2026 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is offered in 7 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point if you want the 5 Series experience with the least expensive starting point, and it uses mild-hybrid technology to improve efficiency. It makes sense if you want the badge, the curved-display tech, and the luxury-sedan feel without stepping up to the more powerful six-cylinder setup.
• 540i: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest all-around balance of refinement, speed, and efficiency. The turbocharged inline-six, standard AWD, and available M Sport upgrades make it the sweet spot for shoppers who want the most satisfying gas-powered version.
• 550e: Choose this if you want a plug-in hybrid version of the 5 Series lineup. It is part of the broader range for buyers who want electrified power without going fully electric.
• i5: This is the all-electric route in the lineup, for shoppers who want a battery-powered 5 Series rather than a gas model.
• i5 M60: Pick this if you want the performance-oriented electric version of the i5 lineup.
• M5: This is the high-performance choice in the lineup, aimed at buyers who want the most serious driving focus.
• M5 Touring: Choose this if you want the M5 performance character in wagon form.

The safety package note is that adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance is part of the car’s Assisted Driving system, while the Driving Assistance Professional package adds more advanced steering-related assistance, evasive support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 899 listings available.
• Clean inventory: 97.0% of listings are accident-free.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns high marks from the IIHS, but it had not yet been tested enough to qualify for Top Safety Pick recognition at the time of publication.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of its Assisted Driving system. If you add the Driving Assistance Professional package, you get steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver assistance, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant, which can provide hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph.

The main caveat is that the review notes the model had not yet completed the full IIHS test battery needed for Top Safety Pick recognition.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• The 2026 5 Series is described as virtually unchanged and entering its third year after a 2024 redesign, which points to a mature, well-sorted package.

The bottom line: If you want the most settled version of this generation, the 2026 is the one to target because it combines strong expert ratings, a mature design, and broad market availability. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a similar configuration offers a lower entry cost, but the 2026 stands out as the safer bet for buyers who want the latest version of this generation without waiting for a major redesign.
