How much does the 2026 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 12.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 923 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series a good car?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns an 8/10 expert rating and is presented as a luxury sedan that blends comfort, technology, and driving enjoyment in a way that feels especially well rounded.

The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

That balance shows up in the review language: it is described as fun to drive, comfortable, and impressive in its technology, while also being mature and virtually unchanged after its redesign. The main trade-offs are that the styling may be polarizing and the digital voice assistant can have occasional quirks.

For shoppers who want a midsize luxury sedan that can lean toward either luxury or more spirited driving depending on specification, this is a strong fit. 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are meaningful opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series reliable?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is described as a mature package rather than a heavily revised one, which is a good sign for shoppers who prefer a more settled ownership experience. It is also presented as comfortable, quiet, and infused with quality, with a powertrain that is relatively fuel efficient for its performance level.

The performance write-up emphasizes that the 540i xDrive is effortlessly smooth, swift, and civilized, and the cost-effectiveness section notes that the car comes with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance. That helps reduce early ownership costs and supports the case for a used purchase.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that the car’s more complex technology and available performance-oriented hardware can make condition and maintenance history especially important.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a car with optional performance or driver-assistance equipment. Focus on overall condition, how the tech systems operate, and whether the car has been used in a way that matches the equipment fitted to it.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring. The 540i is the best-value choice if you want the strongest gas-powered balance of refinement and speed without stepping into the M5’s more extreme territory.
• Powertrain: The 530i and 540i use mild-hybrid technology to improve efficiency, the i5 models are all-electric, and the 550e and M5 variants are plug-in hybrids. The 540i’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six makes 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, rising to 398 pound-feet with mild-hybrid assistance.
• Safety package: The standard setup includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, creating an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, and an emergency stop system, while Highway Assistant is also part of that package.
• Infotainment: The BMW Curved Display includes a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, powered by BMW Operating System 8.5. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with wireless smartphone charging and cloud-connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i xDrive is rated at 28 mpg combined, and the review notes an observed 26.5 mpg on a testing loop.

Which 2026 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is offered in 7 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point if you want the 5 Series experience with the mild-hybrid gas setup and standard rear-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the core luxury and technology without paying for the stronger six-cylinder.
• 540i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbocharged inline-six, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, and a more refined, more powerful driving experience. It is the trim the review focuses on, and it is the one to choose if you want the strongest blend of luxury and performance.
• 550e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and a different ownership profile from the gas models. It sits above the 540i in the lineup and is for buyers prioritizing electrified driving.
• i5: This is the all-electric path in the lineup, aimed at shoppers who want the 5 Series shape and tech with no gasoline engine.
• i5 M60: Pick this if you want the electric model with a stronger performance focus.
• M5: This is the high-performance choice for buyers who want the most serious driving capability in the range.
• M5 Touring: Choose this if you want the M5’s performance character in wagon form.

The 540i is the trim that best matches the review’s recommendation for refinement, sophistication, and effortless speed. Safety equipment is stronger on the 540i than on the 530i, and the Driving Assistance Professional package adds more advanced driver-assistance features if you want them.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop, but the better listings should still move quickly.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 923 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.00% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 96.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $57,841, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $58,253 sits slightly below last year's $66,199.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can help you get into the car at a more attractive price today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment because the model is already trading below its prior-year average.

If you buy well and keep the car in strong shape, you should be better positioned than someone who overpays near the top of the range. The strongest resale prospects will likely come from well-kept examples with desirable equipment and clean history.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series safe?

It earns high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but at the time of publication it had not been subjected to the full battery of tests necessary to qualify for Top Safety Pick recognition.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety setup includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, which BMW groups into an Assisted Driving system. If you move up to the Driving Assistance Professional package, you also get steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant.

Highway Assistant is described as hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph, though it was inactive in the test vehicle. That package is the key safety upgrade to look for if you want the most advanced driver assistance available on this model.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.00% compared with last year.
• The 2026 model is described as virtually unchanged and entering its third year after the redesign, which makes it a mature, well-sorted version of the current generation.

The bottom line: If you want the most settled version of this generation with strong tech, a refined powertrain, and a favorable price trend, the 2026 is the one to target. If your priority is simply spending less, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2026 gives you a strong mix of inventory, condition, and value.
