How much does the 2026 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 11.99% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 917 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series a good car?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns an 8/10 expert rating, and the review describes it as a luxury sedan that blends comfort, technology, and driving enjoyment in a way that feels especially well rounded.

The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

The overview and test-drive notes point to a car that can be tuned toward either luxury or more spirited driving, depending on specification. It is praised for being fun to drive, comfortable, and impressive in its technology, with the 540i xDrive described as a sensational blend of luxury, technology, and performance.

The main trade-offs are that the styling may be polarizing and the digital voice assistant can have occasional quirks. Cargo space is also noted as limited, so you should weigh that against the car’s strengths if practicality matters to you.

With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have enough market choice to shop selectively rather than rush.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series reliable?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is presented as a mature package rather than a heavily revised one, entering its third year after a redesign. That usually helps you shop a used example with more confidence than a first-year redesign, especially when the car is described as virtually unchanged.

The performance notes also support a reassuring ownership picture: the turbocharged inline-six is described as effortlessly smooth, swift, civilized, quiet, comfortable, and infused with quality. The cost-effectiveness notes add that it comes with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which can help reduce early ownership costs.

For a used buyer, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about choosing the right configuration and condition, since the more aggressive wheel-and-suspension setups can make the ride busier and more sensitive to rough roads.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report, verify service records, and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has larger wheels or performance-oriented options. Pay close attention to ride quality, tire wear, and whether the cabin electronics and voice assistant behave as expected during a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 540i test car’s M Sport package adds more expressive bumpers and blacked-out exterior details, while the cabin can be dressed up with Merino leather, ambient lighting, and premium audio. The base setup is more restrained, so you should decide whether you want the more luxury-focused look or the more aggressive appearance and hardware.
• Powertrain: The 540i xDrive uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six with 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, rising to 398 pound-feet with mild-hybrid assistance. It is paired with an eight-speed Sport automatic and standard all-wheel drive, and it is described as smooth, swift, and civilized.
• Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, and an emergency stop system, while Highway Assistant is also included in that package.
• Infotainment: The BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running BMW Operating System 8.5. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM 360L, and a Harman Kardon sound system, with an optional Bowers & Wilkins upgrade.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i xDrive is rated at 28 mpg combined, and the test loop returned 26.5 mpg.

Which 2026 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is offered in 7 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point if you want the 5 Series experience with the least complexity and the most luxury-first positioning. It is the trim to consider if you want the core cabin, tech, and design without stepping into the more powerful or more specialized versions.
• 540i: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest balance of refinement, speed, and everyday usability. The test data specifically recommends upgrading from the 530i to the 540i for extra refinement, sophistication, and effortless speed.
• 550e: Choose this if you want a plug-in hybrid version of the 5 Series lineup and want to prioritize electrified driving within the standard sedan body style.
• i5: This is the all-electric path in the lineup, so it suits you if you want the 5 Series shape and tech with a fully electric powertrain.
• i5 M60: Pick this if you want the electric model with a more performance-oriented character than the standard i5.
• M5: This is the choice for buyers who want the most serious performance focus in the lineup.
• M5 Touring: Choose this if you want the highest-performance wagon variant and need the extra body style.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that Highway Assistant is part of the Driving Assistance Professional package, so some of the most advanced driver-assistance features are tied to option content rather than every car on the lot.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 917 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 97.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $57,941, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $57,955 sits slightly below last year's $65,850.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper resale upside if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you should be better positioned than someone who paid closer to last year’s average.

For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the 5 Series is currently trading in a softer market, so condition, mileage, and equipment will matter more when it comes time to list it again. A well-kept example with desirable options should hold up better than one with heavy wear or a less appealing configuration.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, though it had not yet been subjected to the full battery of tests needed to qualify for Top Safety Pick recognition at the time of publication.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant, which can provide hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph.

One important caveat is that Highway Assistant is tied to the option package, so you should confirm whether a used example has that equipment before assuming it is included.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.99% compared with last year.
• The 2026 model is described as virtually unchanged and entering its third year after the redesign, with the 540i xDrive singled out as a sensational blend of luxury, technology, and performance.

The bottom line: If you want the most mature version of this generation with strong pricing, good inventory quality, and a well-rounded driving experience, the 2026 is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also shop nearby years, but the 2026 gives you a compelling mix of value, equipment, and polish right now.
