CarGurus Analysis: 2025 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 6,266 currently listed for sale and an average price of $32,374, 34.3% of 2025 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2025 Subaru Outback 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
93.6% of 2025 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2025 Subaru Outback stands out as a rugged wagon in a sea of look-alike crossovers. It is one of the last remaining station wagons on the market, which gives it a distinctive shape and identity in a segment dominated by taller, more conventional SUVs. That uncommon body style is part of its appeal for buyers who want something practical but different.
Beyond its looks, the Outback’s strengths are easy to understand. It offers great ride quality, standard all-wheel drive, and great safety ratings. Those traits make it appealing as a comfortable, capable, and confidence-inspiring daily driver. Its main drawbacks are also clear: the base engine is underwhelming, and the touchscreen response is sluggish, so its value and practicality come with some compromises in performance and tech feel.

The 2025 Subaru Outback is fantastic, it is very well built and reasonably priced. We replaced a 2010 Outback that we have chosen to hang on to because they are so well built and dependable.

Is the 2025 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Outback’s reliability case is supported by its straightforward gas powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, and reputation for being comfortable and confidence-inspiring in everyday use. Its safety-focused design and practical layout also point to a vehicle built for steady, long-term ownership rather than flash.
The powertrain is simple and familiar, which can help reduce ownership complexity, and the available maintenance perk language suggests Subaru is trying to keep early service costs manageable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a neglected example could feel less refined because of the transmission and touchscreen behavior.
What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a trim with more equipment. Focus on how the cabin electronics respond, how the drivetrain feels under light and firm throttle, and whether the vehicle shows signs of hard use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base and Premium trims use cloth upholstery and 17-inch wheels, while Onyx and Wilderness models use easy-to-clean StarTex synthetic leather. The Limited trim adds a power moonroof, DriverFocus anti-distraction tech, navigation, a 360-degree heated steering wheel, an 11.6-inch infotainment system, leather interior, and heated seats front and rear.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, while XT trims use a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. Both use regular unleaded gas, and the turbo model is the better choice if you want stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control with lane centering, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency steering. Onyx and higher trims also add blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: Most models use an 11.6-inch touchscreen, while the base model gets twin 7-inch displays. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, wireless unless you have the base model’s twin 7-inch displays.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter model earns 26 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. Turbocharged XT models drop to 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. The Wilderness model returns 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined.
Which 2025 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2025 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx, Wilderness, Limited, Touring XT.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the simplest way into the Outback, and it makes sense if you want the wagon shape, standard all-wheel drive, and the lowest entry price without paying for extra comfort or tech.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience while staying below the more expensive feature-heavy versions.
- Onyx: This trim is the better pick if you want a more rugged-feeling setup and the added safety convenience of blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Wilderness: Choose this if you want the most adventure-focused Outback, with extra ground clearance and the most serious off-road hardware in the lineup.
- Limited: This is the sweet spot if you want a more upscale cabin and the strongest mix of comfort and technology, including the 11.6-inch infotainment system and DriverFocus.
- Touring XT: This is the top choice if you want the strongest combination of turbo power and luxury features, including Nappa leather and ventilated front seats.
Onyx and higher trims also add blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,392 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.75% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 93.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,314, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2025 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $32,314 sits slightly below last year's $33,926.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later.
The Outback’s distinctive wagon shape and strong safety reputation should help it stay appealing to shoppers who want something practical but different. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2025 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2025 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system includes adaptive cruise control with lane centering, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency steering. Onyx and higher trims also add blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
One caveat is that the lane-centering behavior can feel a little busy, with more side-to-side movement than you may want. Even so, the overall safety package is a major strength, especially if you want a used vehicle that prioritizes confidence and driver assistance.
Should I buy a 2025 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2025 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.75% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It remains a distinctive wagon with standard all-wheel drive and strong safety.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $28,971, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $32,314 average.
- It offers a broader trim spread and a more traditional lineup.
Consider the 2026 if:
- It is redesigned with an SUV-like shape and more feature enhancements.
The bottom line: If you want the current Outback’s wagon character, strong safety, and solid market availability, the 2025 is the right year to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2024 is the better value play; if you want the newest redesign, the 2026 is the one to watch.
