Is the 2025 BMW X5 a good car?

The 2025 BMW X5 earns an 8.33/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It stands out as BMW’s midsize luxury SUV, positioned between the X3 and X7, and it continues to appeal because it blends multiple powertrain options, great handling, and a comfortable ride. The trade-offs are clear: value is weaker than rivals, and advanced safety features are not standard.

With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2025 BMW X5 reliable?

The 2025 BMW X5 is presented as a well-rounded SUV that meets expectations for interior space, driving dynamics, and tech, while also carrying BMW’s four-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty.

Its powertrain lineup is broad, with six-cylinder, V8, and plug-in hybrid options, and the standard mild-hybrid setup adds electric assistance to the gasoline engines. The plug-in hybrid also brings meaningful electric-only range, which can help reduce fuel use on shorter trips.

BMW’s four-year/50,000-mile warranty helps soften early ownership risk, but used buyers should still budget for upkeep and repairs as mileage climbs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 BMW X5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and inspect any candidate carefully, especially if it has higher mileage or optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, tire wear, brake condition, and whether the vehicle’s features work as expected. If you’re comparing trims, pay close attention to which driver-assistance and convenience features are standard versus optional.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X5’s base setup includes 20-inch wheels and run-flat all-season tires, while the M Sport Package adds sportier bumpers and Shadowline trim. The Silver Anniversary Edition layers on unique styling and an off-road package, but it is more unusual than broadly appealing.
• Powertrain: You can choose a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive turbocharged inline-six, an all-wheel-drive twin-turbo V8, or a plug-in hybrid with a larger electric motor and battery pack. The six-cylinder models are the efficiency sweet spot, while the V8 and plug-in hybrid trade economy for stronger performance.
• Safety package: The standard Active Driving Assistant includes lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning, but not adaptive cruise control. For that, you need the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which adds Highway Assistant. Parking Assistant is standard, while Parking Assistance Professional adds a 360-degree camera, Active Park Distance Control, and automated parking.
• Infotainment: The curved display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with BMW Operating System 8, voice recognition, steering wheel controls, and available augmented reality navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: Six-cylinder X5 models are EPA-rated at 25 mpg combined, while the V8 model returns 19 mpg combined and the high-performance X5 M Competition is rated at 15 mpg combined. The plug-in hybrid can travel up to 39 miles on electricity alone.

Which 2025 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2025 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i xDrive, X5 M Competition.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive40i: This is the least expensive way into the X5, and it gives you the turbocharged inline-six, strong efficiency, and the core X5 driving experience. It makes the most sense if you want the best value and don’t need all-wheel drive.
• xDrive40i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive without changing the X5’s basic formula. If you want the broadest appeal and a balanced mix of capability and cost, start here.
• xDrive50e: This plug-in hybrid is the right pick if you want electric-only commuting ability and stronger total output. It suits buyers who can charge at home and want efficiency without giving up luxury-SUV versatility.
• M60i xDrive: Choose this if you want the V8 and the quickest mainstream X5 experience. It’s the performance-oriented choice for buyers who care more about speed than fuel economy.
• X5 M Competition: This is the top performance model, with the most extreme acceleration and the highest price. It’s for buyers who want maximum performance and are willing to pay for it.

The standard safety package does not include adaptive cruise control; that requires the Driving Assistance Professional Package.

Should I buy a 2025 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.26% compared with last year.
• It adds a limited-edition 25th-anniversary model without other changes.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $51,592, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $58,871 average.
• It emphasizes driving enjoyment, hybrid efficiency, and a delight-to-drive character.

Consider the 2026 if:

• At $70,950, the 2026 costs more than the current year's $58,871 average.
• It broadens the lineup with five versions and more upgrade flexibility.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version with softened pricing and strong inventory, the 2025 is the cleanest choice. If price matters most, the 2024 is the smarter value play; if you want a broader, more expensive next-step lineup, look to the 2026.
