Is the 2025 BMW X5 a good car?

The 2025 BMW X5 earns an 8.33/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It fits well if you want a midsize luxury SUV that balances multiple powertrain options, strong handling, and a comfortable driving experience. The trade-offs are clear: it is not the strongest value compared with rivals, and advanced safety features are not standard.

With 35.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2025 BMW X5 reliable?

The 2025 BMW X5 is presented as an established, well-developed SUV rather than a newly reinvented one, and that maturity usually helps when you’re shopping used. Its powertrain lineup is broad, and BMW backs it with a four-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty.

The expert notes also point to a well-rounded vehicle that meets expectations for interior space, driving dynamics, and tech. The performance write-up emphasizes smooth power delivery, precise chassis behavior, and a driving feel that remains pleasant even in a large SUV.

BMW’s four-year/50,000-mile warranty helps reduce early ownership exposure, but used buyers should still budget for higher long-term maintenance and repair costs than you’d expect from a simpler SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 BMW X5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has optional wheels, performance tires, or off-road equipment. Focus on tire wear, brake condition, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim and package claims in the listing.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base models come standard with 20-inch wheels and run-flat all-season tires, while M Sport versions add sportier bumpers and Shadowline trim. The Silver Anniversary Edition adds Lime Rock Grey paint and an off-road package, but it is more unusual than broadly appealing.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive six-cylinder models, a V8-powered M60i, and a plug-in hybrid with a larger battery pack and all-electric driving capability.
• Safety package: Standard Active Driving Assistant includes lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning, but not adaptive cruise control. That requires the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which adds Highway Assistant.
• Infotainment: The curved display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BMW Operating System 8, and available augmented reality navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: Six-cylinder models are rated at 25 mpg combined, the V8 model is rated at 19 mpg combined, and the plug-in hybrid can travel up to 39 miles on electric power alone.

Which 2025 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2025 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i xDrive, X5 M Competition.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive40i: This is the least expensive entry point, and it gives you the core X5 experience with the turbocharged inline-six and rear-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and still care about driving feel.
• xDrive40i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive while keeping the same balanced six-cylinder setup and broad everyday appeal.
• xDrive50e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and the strongest electric-only driving capability in the lineup, plus standard air suspension.
• M60i xDrive: This is the performance-oriented V8 choice, with much quicker acceleration and more aggressive hardware for buyers who want more power.
• X5 M Competition: This is the top performance model, aimed at buyers who want maximum speed and the most extreme version of the X5.

The standard safety package does not include adaptive cruise control; you need the Driving Assistance Professional Package for that.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 BMW X5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,150 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.96% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 95.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $57,849, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $57,849 sits slightly below last year's $67,237.

That drop suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can help you get into the SUV at a more reasonable entry point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect depreciation pressure to remain part of the ownership equation.

Because the X5 is a premium SUV with a wide trim spread, condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to resell. Well-kept examples with desirable options should hold up better than stripped or heavily worn ones.

Is the 2025 BMW X5 safe?

The 2025 BMW X5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal and rollover crash tests, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard Active Driving Assistant includes lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning. Adaptive cruise control is not standard; you need the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which adds Highway Assistant with hands-free driving capability at speeds up to 85 mph.

The standard Parking Assistant includes Reversing Assistant, and the optional Parking Assistance Professional Package adds Active Park Distance Control, a 360-degree camera system, and Maneuver Assistant.

Should I buy a 2025 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.96% compared with last year.
• It adds a 25th-anniversary limited edition while keeping the updated 2024-era package.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $51,136, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $57,849 average.
• It offers a plug-in hybrid with about 40 miles of electric-only range.

Consider the 2026 if:

• At $70,850, the 2026 costs more than the current year's $57,849 average.
• It broadens the lineup with five versions and more option flexibility.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing, updated equipment, and broad availability, the 2025 is the sensible default. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2024 is the better value play, while the 2026 makes sense only if you want the newer lineup structure and are comfortable paying more.
