Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 reliable?

The CX-90’s reliability case is helped by its strong overall engineering focus and the way Mazda positions it as a refined, well-built crossover. The expert notes also point to solid composure and a powertrain lineup that aims to deliver both performance and efficiency, which are encouraging signs for everyday durability.

Mazda’s cost-effectiveness notes also frame the CX-90 as a value play relative to pricier luxury alternatives, which can matter when you’re thinking about ownership over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a more complex powertrain and premium-oriented packaging can make neglected examples more expensive to sort out.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Mazda CX-90?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage or heavily optioned examples. Focus on how the cabin electronics operate, whether the powertrain feels smooth in normal driving, and whether the vehicle shows signs of uneven wear from family use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans multiple trims, and lower trims miss some of the upscale touches that make the CX-90 feel special. Higher trims add more luxury-oriented materials and features, while the base versions are more about getting into the model at a lower price.
• Powertrain: You can shop turbocharged inline-six versions or the plug-in hybrid. The turbo six is praised for strong power and character, while the PHEV adds efficiency but has a shorter electric range than some rivals.
• Safety package: i-Activsense is standard and includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, smart brake support with front-crossing and turn-across-traffic identification, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Cruising and traffic support appears on the top-spec test vehicle.
• Infotainment: The CX-90 uses Mazda Connect with a rotary controller instead of a touchscreen for native functions. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, with wireless support on higher-level trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The PHEV is rated at 56 MPGe combined and has an estimated 26-mile electric range, with 490 miles of total driving range.

Which 2024 Mazda CX-90 trim should I buy?

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is offered in 11 trim levels: Turbo Select, Turbo Preferred, Turbo Preferred Plus, Turbo Premium, Turbo Premium Plus, PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium, PHEV Premium Plus, Turbo S, Turbo S Premium, Turbo S Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• Turbo Select: This is the entry point if you want the CX-90’s core strengths at the lowest price. It gets you into the model’s stylish design, standard all-wheel drive, and strong safety tech, but it’s the trim most likely to feel stripped back compared with the richer upper versions.
• Turbo Preferred: This is a sensible step up if you want a better balance of value and comfort. It should suit you if you want more everyday livability without pushing too far up the price ladder.
• Turbo Preferred Plus: This is a good middle-ground choice if you want more equipment while staying below the premium-focused trims. It’s the kind of trim that makes sense if you want a nicer CX-90 without chasing the top-end luxury feel.
• Turbo Premium: This trim is for you if you want a more upscale experience and expect the CX-90 to feel closer to a near-luxury SUV. It builds on the model’s strong design and driving dynamics with a richer overall presentation.
• Turbo Premium Plus: This is the best-value choice if you want the most complete gas-powered CX-90 without going all the way to Turbo S. It should be the trim to target if you want a strong mix of features, refinement, and value.
• PHEV Preferred: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and the CX-90’s standard family-SUV practicality. It’s the right fit if your driving pattern can take advantage of electric commuting.
• PHEV Premium: This is the better PHEV pick if you want more comfort and convenience than the entry plug-in trim. It makes sense if you want the hybrid powertrain but don’t want the most basic version of it.
• PHEV Premium Plus: This is the most appealing plug-in hybrid trim for shoppers who want the PHEV’s efficiency with a more premium feel. If you want the plug-in model, this is the one most likely to feel fully realized.
• Turbo S: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the strongest gas-engine tuning and the most dramatic character. Buy this if you care most about power and driving excitement.
• Turbo S Premium: This is for buyers who want the Turbo S experience with more comfort and polish. It’s the right step if you want performance without giving up too much refinement.
• Turbo S Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the most luxurious and fully equipped CX-90. It’s the trim to buy if you want the best overall version and are willing to pay for it.

The safety suite is standard across the lineup, so you don’t need to move up trims just to get the core driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Mazda CX-90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,885 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.00% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,767, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Mazda CX-90's resale value?

The current average of $30,767 sits slightly below last year's $34,188.

That decline suggests the CX-90 is currently in a softer pricing phase, which can be good news if you’re buying but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the market has already adjusted downward, so holding the vehicle longer may help you avoid locking in today’s lower values.

The model’s premium positioning and strong driving appeal should help it stay relevant with shoppers who want something more distinctive than a typical three-row SUV. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 safe?

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has not been crash-tested by IIHS or NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda’s i-Activsense suite comes standard and includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, smart brake support with front-crossing and turn-across-traffic identification, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Cruising and traffic support is also present on the top-spec test vehicle, adding lane-centering to adaptive cruise control for hands-on driver support.

The main caveat is that there are no official crash-test results yet, so you’re relying on the standard safety equipment and Mazda’s broader safety reputation rather than published ratings.

Should I buy a 2024 Mazda CX-90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2024 brings rear-wheel-drive architecture and a turbocharged straight-six or PHEV powertrain.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $33,554, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $30,767 average.
• It adds a more distinctive personality with premium styling and unusual powertrain choices.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2024 is the smarter buy because prices have softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2025 is the secondary path for buyers who want to compare feature updates and don’t mind paying a premium.
