Though it’s known for building beefy off-road SUVs, Jeep is transitioning to electrification, and while we wait on an electric Wrangler, we’ve got the Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the iconic vehicle. The powertrain debuted a couple of years ago, and it's now made the transition to the new 2024 Wrangler, the SUV’s next-gen model. ## What’s New for the 2024 Jeep Wrangler Jeep redesigned the Wrangler for 2024, but the changes aren’t as dramatic-looking on the surface as they sound on paper. Beyond updated styling, the Wrangler gets a more upscale interior with nicer tech, upgraded safety features, and more off-road goodies to help it excel on the trail. ## Design The new Wrangler retains its seven-slot grille, and the SUV’s overall look hasn’t changed drastically from that of its predecessor. It’s still a boxy off-roader with body graphics that reflect its trim configuration. Jeep offers a range of wheel designs, and the automaker said that the new Wrangler uses high-strength, lightweight aluminum hardware to keep the SUV’s weight down. 10 new wheel designs are available in sizes ranging from 17 to 20 inches, and tires can go as large as 35 inches. ## Powertrain The 4xe powertrain uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and combined output is 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive (4WD) come standard, and the 4xe’s setup returns up to 49 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent). All-electric range reaches 21 miles on a charge, and the 4xe is available with a Jeep Power Box that includes four 120-volt outlets and a total output of 30 amps. Three drive modes let the owner choose how to use battery power, with settings for hybrid, electric, and electric save, which prioritizes the gas engine to preserve battery charge. ## Interior Jeep also updated the Wrangler’s interior, giving it features that the SUV has lacked for years. Engineers figured out how to incorporate power seat adjustments without lowering the Wrangler’s water fording depth, and the cabin is more upscale than it was in previous generations. Each trim gets a unique interior with exclusive graphics and colors, and Jeep offers a range of interior materials, from cloth to synthetic leather to genuine hides. ## Technology All 2024 Wrangler and Wrangler 4xe models get a 12.3-inch touchscreen running Jeep’s excellent Uconnect infotainment software. The new system offers an updated interface with an available trail navigation system that brings waypoint guidance and other features to help get Wrangler owners safely back on the road. ## Safety Jeep gave the new Wrangler more than 85 standard and available driver aids. Standard tech starts with the Sport S trim and includes forward-collision warnings, adaptive cruise with stop and go, and more. The High Altitude trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear parking assistance. ## Pricing Pricing for the 2024 Wrangler 4xe starts at $49,995 before options, destination, and taxes. Several trim levels are available, and at the top end of the lineup, the Rubicon 4xe starts at $69,680.
