Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 a good car?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is a mixed but appealing choice if you want a compact luxury SUV with style, comfort, and multiple powertrain options. It earns 2/5 from users and 7.5/10 from our experts.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Volvo’s updates for this model year add revised styling and an Android-based infotainment system, while the XC40’s compact footprint keeps it positioned as an entry-level luxury crossover rather than an oversized SUV. The trade-offs are that it is not especially cargo-friendly and the review team notes that the Recharge model is expensive.

The market is fairly accessible, with 37.4% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is presented as a competent luxury subcompact crossover with a refined driving experience and upscale design, but its newly added mild-hybrid components add some complexity.

The mild-hybrid setup uses a 48-volt electrical system and an integrated starter generator to assist the gasoline engine, smooth power delivery, and improve fuel economy. Volvo also includes a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, which is standard coverage but does not fully remove the concern that comes with added hybrid hardware.

For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is more about the complexity of the newer powertrain than about any single obvious flaw.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are looking at a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, how the touchscreen-based controls work in daily use, and whether the vehicle’s features and trim level match what you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Core trim leaves out front parking sensors and adaptive cruise control, while Plus adds front parking sensors and Ultimate adds side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist.
• Powertrain: The B4 setup pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with mild-hybrid assistance and front-wheel drive, while the B5 uses a more powerful version of the same formula with all-wheel drive; the mild-hybrid system is meant to improve smoothness and efficiency.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert; the base trim does not include adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 9-inch portrait touchscreen are standard, along with Google-based built-in apps, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth support.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2023 Volvo XC40 is rated at 27 mpg combined, with 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for B4 FWD models, and 26 mpg combined, with 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway for B5 AWD models.

Which 2023 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC40’s core safety and tech features without the extra convenience equipment found higher up the range.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim because it adds front parking sensors and fog lights while keeping the XC40’s main strengths intact.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist for buyers who want the most advanced feature set.

The safety package is strongest as you move up the range, but even the base trim includes a broad set of standard driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,239 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.83% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 91.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $27,831, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $27,831 sits slightly below last year's $30,527.

That decline suggests the XC40 has softened in the used market, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than on broad market momentum alone.

Because the price range has moved down, a well-kept example with desirable features should hold up better than a higher-mileage or lightly equipped one.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 earns Good ratings in most IIHS crash tests, but it was rated Acceptable in the updated side-impact test. It also earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and a four-star rollover rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC40 with lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert as standard. The base trim does not include adaptive cruise control, while Plus adds front parking sensors and Ultimate adds side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist.

The updated side-impact result is the main caveat to keep in mind, even though the XC40 still posts strong overall safety credentials.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.83% compared with last year.
• The 2023 model year brings new mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and the Android-based infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version of the XC40’s updated powertrains and tech, the 2023 is the right target. If your priority is stretching your budget further, a nearby model year may offer a lower entry price, but you give up some of the 2023 updates.
