Used 2023 Volvo XC40 for Sale nearSaint Louis, MO

How much does the 2023 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 8.76% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,182 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 a good car?

With a 2/5 user rating and an expert rating of 7.5/10, the 2023 XC40 looks better on paper than it does in owner feedback, so you should weigh its strengths and compromises carefully.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

The XC40 fits you well if you want a small luxury crossover with a distinctly Scandinavian design, a refined ride, and a premium-feeling cabin. It also brings updated mild-hybrid powertrains and revised styling for this model year, which helps keep it current in a crowded entry-level luxury segment.

The trade-offs are clear: cargo space is limited, and the model’s entry-level positioning shows up in some of the materials and equipment choices. The cost-effectiveness score is also modest, so you’re paying more for style, comfort, and brand character than for maximum practicality or value.

36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2023 XC40 leans on Volvo’s safety-first reputation and a refined, well-sorted driving experience, but it also adds new mild-hybrid hardware that makes long-term ownership worth a closer look.

The mild-hybrid setup uses a 48-volt electrical system and an integrated starter generator to smooth power delivery and improve fuel economy, which is a sensible engineering move. Volvo also backs the XC40 with a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, which gives you standard coverage for a luxury SUV.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is the added complexity of the newer mild-hybrid components, so a thorough pre-purchase inspection matters more than usual.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the tech and driver-assistance features work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Core models cover the basics, but Plus adds front parking sensors and Ultimate adds side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist. The base trim’s lack of standard adaptive cruise control is the biggest feature gap to watch.
• Powertrain: You get B4 front-wheel drive or B5 all-wheel drive mild-hybrid setups. The B4 uses a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 197 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, while the B5 uses a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-prevention front seats. Adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist are reserved for the top trim.
• Infotainment: A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 9-inch touchscreen are standard, along with Google-based built-in apps, Apple CarPlay, and basic Bluetooth support.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA ratings are 27 mpg combined for B4 FWD models and 26 mpg combined for B5 AWD models.

Which 2023 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the value play if you want the XC40’s design, mild-hybrid powertrain, and standard safety equipment without paying for extras. It gives you the essentials, but you give up some convenience and driver-assistance features that many shoppers will want.
• Plus: This is the trim that makes the most sense for many buyers because it adds front parking sensors and closes some of the gap between the base model and the top trim. If you want the best balance of equipment and price, this is the one to focus on.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist. It suits you best if you want the most advanced convenience and driver-assistance content available in the XC40 lineup.

The safety-package upgrade path is straightforward: Core starts with the essentials, Plus adds front parking sensors, and Ultimate brings the most complete driver-assistance setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you have room to shop, but the best listings can still move quickly.

• Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,182 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.76% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 91.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,435, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $28,472 sits slightly below last year's $31,207.

That decline suggests the XC40 has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help you get into a premium small SUV at a lower entry point. For a future seller, though, it also means you should expect a softer resale environment than the prior year.

If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can still protect value better than average. The key is to avoid overpaying now, because the market has already moved down from last year’s level.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2023 XC40 earns Good ratings in most IIHS crash tests, though it drops to Acceptable in the updated side-impact test. It also earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and a four-star rollover rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-prevention front seats. Adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist are reserved for the top trim, so the base model leaves some advanced driver-assistance tech on the table.

The updated side-impact result is the main caveat to keep in mind, even though the XC40 still posts strong overall crash performance.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.76% compared with last year.
• It appeals to you that this model year adds new mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and the Android-based infotainment system.

The bottom line: The 2023 XC40 is the better pick if you want the updated powertrain and tech package in a compact luxury SUV with strong safety credentials. If you’re mainly shopping for the lowest possible price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2023 gives you the most current version of this design without moving into a much newer price bracket.
