CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 5,295 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,436, 34.1% of 2023 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Subaru Outback 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
89.1% of 2023 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Subaru Outback stands out for blending carlike driving manners with SUV-like utility, which is a big part of its appeal. It also comes with standard all-wheel drive, impressive safety systems and ratings, and excellent utility, giving it a strong value proposition for buyers who want versatility without moving to a larger vehicle.
For 2023, the Outback receives several updates, including fresh styling, new infotainment and safety technologies, and a more accessible price point for the popular Onyx Edition, which features blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery. Those changes help keep it competitive while preserving the rugged character that has long defined the model.
There are still a few tradeoffs to consider. The base engine is underwhelming, the design may be polarizing, and the voice recognition system can be frustrating. Even so, the 2023 Subaru Outback remains appealing for shoppers who prioritize safety, utility, and all-weather confidence.

Reviewed a 2023 Subaru Touring XT AWD on Jul 2, 2023
I just purchased a 2023 Outback Touring and I am having the same windshield problems. If I’m in a Lighted area, I can see fine at night but when I start into unlit areas, I can’t see at night. This is a very serious safety issue. The black shield that covers the windshield makes it almost impossible to see what is in front of me. I previously owned a 2017 Subaru Outback and did not have this problem.

| Year-Round Low | $26,341 |
| Year-Round High | $28,333 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,331 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.02% |
Prices have softened 7.02% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,365 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Subaru Outback earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The Outback’s appeal comes from its carlike driving manners, SUV-like utility, standard all-wheel drive, and strong safety focus. For 2023, it also gets fresh styling plus new infotainment and safety technology, along with a more accessible price point for the Onyx Edition.
The trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and the polarizing design, and the voice recognition system can be frustrating. If you want versatility without moving to a larger vehicle, this model year fits that use case well.
34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Outback’s reliability case is strengthened by its standard all-wheel drive, generous utility, and safety-focused engineering. The boxer engine layout helps lower the center of gravity, and the drivetrain is built around a CVT and an Active Torque Split AWD system that continuously adjusts power distribution as conditions change.
Its performance notes point to a capable, confidence-inspiring setup for daily use and rough weather, even if the base engine feels short on urgency. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the standard powertrain may leave you wanting more power if you regularly drive at elevation or carry heavier loads.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one that has seen rough-weather use. Focus on overall condition, cabin wear, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re shopping.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim is the simplest version, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. The Onyx Edition is positioned as a more accessible choice for 2023, and it pairs its blacked-out look with water-resistant upholstery.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four in XT models makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The standard setup is the better fit if you value efficiency and lower cost, but the turbo is the stronger choice if you want easier passing and better mountain performance.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires an option package on the Premium or an upgrade to the Onyx Edition, and the Limited and Touring add a Wide-Angle Mono Camera.
- Infotainment: The Base trim uses a 7-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM. Starting with Premium, you get the 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus access to connected services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving in testing, while XT models are generally rated at 25 mpg combined. The Wilderness trim is rated at 23 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2023 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, and Wilderness.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the least expensive way into the Outback, but it also comes with the smaller 7-inch touchscreen and wired smartphone connectivity instead of the larger wireless setup. It makes sense if you want the Outback’s core utility and standard all-wheel drive at the lowest price.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s the trim to target if you want the biggest everyday usability upgrade without moving too far up the price ladder.
- Onyx Edition: This trim adds a more distinctive look with black wheels and trim, and it is now available with the base powertrain as well as the turbocharged setup. It suits you if you want a more expressive Outback with broader powertrain choice.
- Limited: This trim adds more upscale equipment and also gets the Wide-Angle Mono Camera. It’s a good fit if you want a more premium feel and extra driver-assistance hardware.
- Touring: This is the most upscale mainstream choice, with the richest cabin presentation and the most luxury-oriented feel. It’s the one to choose if comfort and interior ambiance matter most.
- Wilderness: This is the most adventure-focused version, with the turbo engine standard, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and a more capable X-Mode system. Choose it if your priorities lean toward rough roads, trails, and winter travel.
For safety-package shoppers, note that blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is not standard on the Base and requires either an option package on the Premium or an upgrade to the Onyx Edition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,365 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.02% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,341, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $26,341 sits slightly below last year's $28,331.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the key advantage is that the Outback still has broad appeal thanks to its utility, safety focus, and standard all-wheel drive.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2023 Subaru Outback earns top marks from the IIHS, including in the new, more stringent side-impact crash test.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. With the available upgrade path, it also adds Automatic Emergency Steering, and the Limited and Touring trims offer a Wide-Angle Mono Camera for better pedestrian and cyclist detection.
One caveat is that rear automatic braking can be incompatible with some driveways, and the system may need to be switched off in certain situations. The adaptive cruise and lane-centering setup can also feel artificial in use.
Should I buy a 2023 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds fresh styling, new infotainment and safety tech, and a more accessible Onyx Edition price.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,009, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $26,341 average.
- It emphasizes a more adventure-focused Wilderness setup with strong trail capability.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $28,971, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $26,341 average.
- It broadens trim choice with feature-enriched versions and trim-specific aesthetic tweaks.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated tech, safety, and current-market pricing, the 2023 is the primary pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 can save you money, while the 2024 makes sense if you want to pay more for a broader trim spread.
