Why it stands out
The 2023 Subaru Outback stands out for blending carlike manners with SUV-style utility, and it does so with standard all-wheel drive, strong safety systems and ratings, and a reputation for excellent value. It also has a long history as one of the first modern crossovers, which helps explain why it remains such a familiar choice for buyers who want versatility without moving to a larger, truckier vehicle.
For 2023, the Outback gets fresh styling along with new infotainment and safety technologies, giving it a more up-to-date feel. The popular Onyx Edition also becomes more accessible, and it adds blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery. Those updates build on the momentum of the rugged Outback Wilderness, while the Outback’s appeal is further strengthened by its impressive off-roading capability for a crossover.
There are still a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The base engine is underwhelming, the design may not appeal to everyone, and the voice recognition system can be frustrating. Even so, the 2023 Subaru Outback remains a compelling option for shoppers who value safety, utility, and all-weather confidence.

Reviewed a 2023 Subaru Touring XT AWD on Jul 2, 2023
I just purchased a 2023 Outback Touring and I am having the same windshield problems. If I’m in a Lighted area, I can see fine at night but when I start into unlit areas, I can’t see at night. This is a very serious safety issue. The black shield that covers the windshield makes it almost impossible to see what is in front of me. I previously owned a 2017 Subaru Outback and did not have this problem.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,908 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,908 |
| Year-Round High | $28,021 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,023 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.55% |
Prices have softened 7.55% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,419 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and trims.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Subaru Outback earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The Outback’s appeal comes from its blend of carlike manners and SUV-style utility, plus standard all-wheel drive and strong safety systems. It also gets fresh styling and updated infotainment and safety technology for this year, which helps it feel more current.
The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and the potentially polarizing design. The voice recognition system is another weak point, so you may find the tech experience less polished than the rest of the package.
For shoppers who want versatility, all-weather confidence, and strong value without moving to a larger SUV, it fits the brief well. Good and great deals account for 38.5% of listings, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Outback’s reliability case is supported by its reputation for safety, utility, and all-weather confidence. The standard all-wheel-drive setup and generous ground clearance also point to a durable, go-anywhere ownership formula.
Its boxer engine layout is designed to lower the center of gravity, which helps handling, and the CVT is tuned to mimic eight forward gears for smoother everyday operation. Subaru also says the new wireless smartphone connectivity helps reduce clutter, and that can make daily use feel less frustrating.
If you plan to keep one for the long haul, the biggest ownership risk is that the base powertrain may feel strained, especially if you regularly drive at elevation or carry heavy loads.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not guaranteed. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the powertrain, infotainment operation, and driver-assistance features, since those are the areas most likely to affect day-to-day satisfaction. Pay close attention to cabin condition and any signs of heavy use if you’re considering a higher-trim example.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get the 11.6-inch portrait display and wireless smartphone connectivity. The Onyx Edition is more accessible this year and adds blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery, while Touring trim brings a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four in XT models makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. The standard engine is the efficiency-minded choice, but the turbo is the better pick if you want stronger passing and climbing power.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires an option package on Premium or an upgrade to Onyx Edition, and Limited and Touring add a wide-angle mono camera.
- Infotainment: The 11.6-inch touchscreen is standard on every trim except Base, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start with Premium. Subaru also offers Starlink connected services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, depending on trim.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine returned 25.6 mpg in testing, while the EPA said the test vehicle should have returned 28 mpg in combined driving. XT models are rated at 25 mpg combined, and Wilderness is rated at 23 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2023 Subaru Outback is offered in 8 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, Wilderness, Onyx Edition XT, and Touring XT.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback’s standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight safety suite, and practical crossover shape. It makes the most sense if you value value over tech, since it uses the smaller 7-inch touchscreen and wired smartphone integration.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s the trim to target if you want the biggest everyday upgrade without jumping into luxury pricing.
- Onyx Edition: This is the better choice if you want a more distinctive look and the water-resistant upholstery mentioned in the updates. It also makes the turbo powertrain more accessible than before.
- Limited: This is the step-up choice if you want more comfort and the added wide-angle mono camera. It suits buyers who want a more upscale feel without going all the way to Touring.
- Touring: This is the most upscale non-turbo choice, and it’s the one to buy if you want the richest cabin presentation. It’s best for shoppers who care most about comfort and refinement.
- Wilderness: This is the pick if your priorities lean toward rougher terrain and outdoor use. It’s the most capability-focused version in the lineup.
- Onyx Edition XT: This is the turbocharged version of the Onyx Edition, and it’s the right move if you want stronger acceleration with the same more adventurous styling.
- Touring XT: This is the top-end comfort-and-performance blend, pairing the turbo engine with the Touring trim’s upscale equipment.
For safety-package shoppers, note that blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires an option package on Premium or an upgrade to Onyx Edition, while Limited and Touring add the wide-angle mono camera.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep scarcity.
- Deal availability: 38.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,419 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.55% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,908, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $25,908 sits slightly below last year's $28,023.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than assuming prices will rebound quickly.
Well-equipped versions with stronger demand should hold up better than base examples, especially if they’re clean and well maintained. The current pricing spread also gives you a clearer benchmark for setting expectations when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2023 Subaru Outback earns top marks across the board from IIHS, including in the newer side-impact crash test.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. Subaru also adds new cameras and an electronic brake booster this year to refine how the safety systems operate and to support pedestrian, cyclist, and automatic steering functions.
If you choose the right trim, you can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and Limited and Touring offer a wide-angle mono camera for better detection in crowded areas. One caveat is that the rear automatic braking system can be incompatible with some driveways, so it may not be ideal for every home setup.
Should I buy a 2023 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 38.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds fresh styling plus updated infotainment and safety technology.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $23,823, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,908 average.
- It emphasizes the Wilderness trim and rugged outdoor capability.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $28,616, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,908 average.
- It broadens the trim lineup and adds feature-enriched trim levels.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated tech, safety, and value, the 2023 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 can save you money, while the 2024 makes sense if you want the broader trim spread and are willing to pay more.
