Used 2023 Subaru Outback for Sale nearFredericksburg, VA

How much does the 2023 Subaru Outback cost?

Prices have softened 8.30% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 5,420 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and trims.

Is the 2023 Subaru Outback a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Subaru Outback earns 4.3/5 from users and 7.8/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

It stands out for blending carlike manners with SUV-style utility, and it does so with standard all-wheel drive, strong safety systems and ratings, and a reputation for excellent value. For 2023, it also gets fresh styling plus new infotainment and safety technologies, which gives it a more up-to-date feel.

The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and the potentially polarizing design. The frustrating voice recognition system is another drawback, especially if you expect the built-in tech to do more of the work for you.

For you, that means the Outback makes the most sense if you want versatility, all-weather confidence, and a practical crossover shape rather than outright performance. The market also shows 33.5% good or great deals, which is a healthy sign for value shoppers.

Is the 2023 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 Outback’s reliability case is supported by its strong safety reputation, standard all-wheel drive, and a design focused on everyday utility. Its boxer engine layout helps lower the center of gravity for better handling, and Subaru’s AWD system continually varies power distribution as conditions change.

The performance notes also point to a drivetrain built for confidence in mixed conditions, with X-Mode traction control and hill descent control helping on steeper or looser surfaces. On the cost side, Subaru says the Outback offers great value, and the model’s standard equipment mix reinforces that ownership appeal.

If you buy used, the biggest long-term risk is ending up with a vehicle that has been driven hard or maintained poorly, especially if you plan to rely on its all-weather and off-road strengths.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Subaru Outback?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has been used in snow, on rough roads, or for towing. Focus on overall condition, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the cabin electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base trim is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The Onyx Edition is the one called out for blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery, which makes it a better fit if you want a more distinctive and durable-feeling cabin.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 182 horsepower and can feel short on passing and climbing power. The turbocharged 2.4-liter XT setup delivers 260 hp and is the better choice if you want stronger acceleration and more confidence at elevation.
• Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires an option package on Premium or an upgrade to Onyx Edition, and Limited and Touring add a wide-angle mono camera.
• Infotainment: The Base trim uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Starting with Premium, the 11.6-inch touchscreen adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus access to connected services and available navigation and premium audio.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is described as not as fuel efficient as expected, and the XT models are less efficient than the base powertrain. The Wilderness trim is rated at 23 mpg combined, while most other XT models are rated at 25 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2023 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, and Wilderness.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point if you want the Outback’s core strengths at the lowest price, including standard all-wheel drive and the basic EyeSight safety suite. It makes sense if you care more about value and capability than upscale features.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen and wireless smartphone connectivity while staying below the more expensive trims. It also opens the door to more available safety equipment.
• Onyx Edition: This is the right pick if you want a more distinctive look and the water-resistant upholstery highlighted in the overview. It also makes the blind-spot monitoring package easier to get than on the Base trim.
• Limited: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, and it also gets the wide-angle mono camera mentioned in the safety content. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without going all the way to the top.
• Touring: This is the most luxurious mainstream choice, with the most premium-feeling cabin treatment described in the review. It is best if you want the most comfort-focused version of the standard Outback.
• Wilderness: This is the most adventure-focused trim, with the strongest off-road emphasis in the lineup. Choose it if rough terrain matters more to you than on-road polish.

For safety, note that blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is not standard on the Base and requires either an option package on Premium or an upgrade to Onyx Edition.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Subaru Outback?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,420 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 87.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,584, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $25,584 sits slightly below last year's $27,899.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. The Outback’s strong value reputation and broad appeal should help support demand, especially among shoppers who want standard all-wheel drive and utility without moving to a larger SUV.

Its safety reputation and practical layout also work in its favor when it comes time to resell. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2023 Subaru Outback earns top marks across the board from IIHS, including in the new, more stringent side-impact crash test.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist in the Base model. With additional equipment, it also adds Automatic Emergency Steering, and Limited and Touring trims offer a wide-angle mono camera for better pedestrian and cyclist detection.

One caveat is that blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is not standard on the Base trim and requires either an option package on Premium or an upgrade to Onyx Edition. The rear automatic braking system can also be finicky in some driveways.

Should I buy a 2023 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds fresh styling plus new infotainment and safety technologies.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $23,541, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,584 average.
• It emphasizes the Wilderness trim and rugged outdoor capability.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $28,345, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,584 average.
• It broadens trim choice and adds feature-enriched versions.

The bottom line: If you want the newest updates and still want a relatively soft used-market price, the 2023 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2022 is the price-sensitive alternative; if you want more trim variety and are willing to pay more, the 2024 is worth a look.
